Useful combination
Status: de facto

Use tag landuse=industrial to delineate areas of land used for industrial purposes. Industrial land may include buildings like workshops, factories or warehouses and their associated infrastructure (car parks, service roads, yards and so-on). Occasionally several industrial tenants may occupy one property in which case the property itself may be known as an industrial park (eventually be tagged with a place=* tag like place=neighbourhood).

How to map

Where possible, it is preferred to map as an area, otherwise a node at the centre of the area can be used. Either way, put the tag landuse=industrial on the area or node.

As an approximation, the area can contain the whole industrial zone together with parking lots and streets, but when represented in more detail, public streets are excluded (highway landuse).

Tags used in combination

Common industrial features are mapped with man_made=*, for example a factory is tagged as man_made=works.

Utility facilities

If, and only if, a given industrial area is dedicated to an utility activity, it is possible to use utility=* with the corresponding value.

For instance, industrial sites involved in power generation, transmission or distribution would get utility=power while facilities involved in gas production, transmission or distribution would get utility=gas.
And then we could combine with domain-specific tagging like power=plant or pipeline=substation.

Think about heating, water or sewerage as well.

When not to use

This area is landuse=farmland - even if local government zoned it for industrial purposes and construction is planned in future

This tag should only be used for land which is primarily used for industrial purposes. It should not be used sweepingly for larger areas containing industrial infrastructure at different places but most of the area as a whole not being used industrially (rather be more detailed and add industrial landuse to these parts only).

This comprises oil fields or wind farms. In such cases the land effectively used should be tagged with landuse=industrial but not the whole area.

Areas zoned as industrial by local development plans, but not yet used as industrial areas should be marked according to their current situation.
