A lifting stone is a stone that was in the past used for testing the strength of men, usually in a rural setting throughout Europe. They are sometimes named, and their stories are recorded in folklore. A recent revival has brought the custom back, recorded on social media. Even though they are movable by strong enough people, they are usually only lifted and put back into place.

Tagging

Add a node node at the location of the lifting stone and add the tag historic=lifting_stone. If the tradition has been ongoing or has been revived, you can additionally add leisure=lifting_stone. Useful additional tags are:

  • name=* for the specific name of that stone, NOT name=Lifting Stone
  • material=* the type of stone, i.e. granite, limestone etc, don't use material=stone, because that is implied
  • access=* to indicate whether permission needs to be granted by landowner to access the site where the stone is situated
  • indoor=yes Some have been moved indoors for safekeeping.
  • weight=* for the weight of the stone in kilograms, use "kg"
  • liftable=yes/no Some stones are no longer liftable, because they have been cemented in place. Please indicate whether this is the case.
  • description=*
  • location=* if the location needs further description
  • moved=yes if the stone is known to have been moved from its original location (due to road works or similar)
  • image=* or wikimedia_commons=* to link an image of the stone
  • wikidata=* for the Wikidata entry of that specific stone. More sources like mentions in folklore collections or video links about it being lifted can be added there or on Wikipedia.
  • wikipedia=* for the Wikipedia page of that specific stone
  • url:sketchfab=* link to 3D model of stone on Sketchfab.com
  • heritage=*
  • ref reference to a heritage database, for example ref:IE:smr=*

If the stones serves another function other than lifting stone, for example as a man_made=guard_stone, add the appropriate tags. If there is an information board or similar for the stone, please add that as well.

If it is considered a tourist attraction (a good indicator is an official information board), you can also add tourism=attraction and map the information board.
