Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport contested by two teams, usually of eleven players, each on a large grass Cricket pitch. Played on a large circular or oval-shaped grassy Cricket ground. Cricket grounds are often used for other field sports in the winter, such as Australian Rules Football or field hockey. There are often cricket nets nearby a cricket ground.

Most grounds will have a protected area of very fine grass which contains a number of pitches, 'the square'. Games are rotated across the square to avoid excessive wear to any one part. In general the entire cricket field to the boundary rope is what gets mapped on OSM. No consensus exists as to how to map the square or all weather or artificial wickets which are frequently found on them these days.

How to Map

Since sport=cricket is a non-physical tag it should be combined with other (physical) tags, eg:

• leisure=pitch - An area designed for practising sport, normally designated with appropriate markings.
• leisure=practice_pitch - A small place set up for practicing a given sport, but not appropriate for a full game. See also sport=cricket_nets.
• leisure=sports_centre - A sports centre is a distinct facility where multiple sports take place within an enclosed area.
• leisure=stadium - A major sports facility with substantial tiered seating.
• shop=sports - A shop selling sports equipment and clothing.
• club=sport - A club for the purpose of playing or supporting one or more sports.
• landuse=recreation_ground - An open green space for general recreation, which often includes formal or informal pitches, nets and so on. Often municipally owned, sometimes part of colleges / companies or commercially operated.
