Have you posted this on the tagging mailinglist? --AndiG88 (talk) 21:21, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

There was a request for comment to the tagging mailing list as the proposal for shop=marijuana, which from the discussion I was convinced to change it to shop=cannabis. It is still so infrequently used and other things have my priority, so have not continued the process. --User:russdeffner 17:57, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Oregon

These shops are popping up all over the place in Oregon. I've been adding a bunch of them in the Portland metro area. I haven't been making a distinction between medical and recreational marijuana shops; I've been using shop=cannabis for both kinds of shops. It's not obvious which shops sell only to medical marijuana card holders and which shops sell the the general (21 years or older) public. I know there were a number of shops that were open last year only for medical marijuana, but have since started selling recreation marijuana as well. I've read that in other states, the medical and recreational sales have to be separated and not directly part of the same shop, but in Oregon that is not the case.

We are up to 50 global occurrences now:

I've been adding them in Washington as I find them. --Carnildo (talk) 04:34, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Alaska

Marijuana was legalized for recreational use in Alaska a couple of years ago. After a longish period of time during which the pertinent governing agency, the Marijuana Control Board, developed regulations dealing with taxation and other issues, as of now there are several shops open and operating statewide with some dozens of shops cleared for future operation. I am tagging them with shop=cannabis and any other pertinent data I can locate. I am not attempting to differentiate between medical and recreational uses because the State of Alaska doesn't treat them differently.

cannabis:sales=yes/no

Check shop subtags.
I'm not sure if those cannabis shops will mainly sell but cannabis.
In case a shop=tobacco, amenity=hookah_lounge, amenity=cafe (like in Amsterdam), amenity=pharmacy (for medical purpose)
sells cannabis, people may want to tag this, also.
Can even imagine a shop=alcohol or a shop=clothes (Hippie/Rocker clothes) selling this if it's legal. user:rtfm Rtfm (talk) 12:50, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

I don't think adding cannabis:sales=yes is a useful addition to shop=cannabis. Certainly adding cannabis:sales=no to shop=cannabis doesn't make sense. I don't think the other proposed subtags like cannabis:rental, cannabis:parts, cannabis:repair, etc make sense here either.
The way this is implemented in Oregon is that these shops are licensed to sell cannabis and that is their primary purpose. There are various restrictions in terms of the amount that can be sold and some require customers to have a medical marijuana card.--Dobratzp (talk) 17:23, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
I agree. By definition, cannabis shops sell cannabis making the cannabis:sales=yes tag redundant. Two possible clarifying tags might be cannabis:medical=* and cannabis:recreational=* and although I think this distinction will ultimately become unimportant there are several states that license them separately. By the way, the tagging list is trending toward the use of sells as the verb of choice for such subtags, not sales. Sale is a noun, as the argument goes, and implies some sort of promotion, for example, a "10% Off Sale". AlaskaDave (talk) 22:28, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
One other possibility is to create a subtag for something like cannabis:equipment=yes/no because there may be places that sell cannabis presses, for example, or other related gear. AlaskaDave (talk) 22:28, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

Abandoned?

The proposal may not be very active, but with almost 300 uses, the tag is very much in use. --Carnildo (talk) 19:23, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

For now, I guess; https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Mateusz_Konieczny made the change, I thought Undefined would be better; he changed back. I emailed him, but have not heard back yet. If I get some free time, I'll look into trying to revive the proposal or feel free to take it over.(talk) 10:12, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
Tag itself may be used, but proposal is abandoned, with last activity in 2015 Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:34, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
Hi, maybe you didn't get my email, not sure how wiki-messaging works. I have been actively discussing this proposal with the community as recently as a mapathon last weekend. And seeing immediate question about the status change here, I think you get my point. I will take some time to make some needed updates and welcome any assistance to move this through the process. (russdeffner talk)
In that case I will switch it back to draft - lets count this discussion as activity... Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 23:11, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

Time for a vote?

There are 295 uses as of this writing of the tag.

It appears that this tagging has become a de facto standard and as western countries grow more lenient on cannabis, OSM should keep up with progress.

Can we begin the formal voting process now? I have never voted or initiated voting on OSM. --ElliottPlack (talk) 02:38, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Elliot, I would appreciate help getting this to a vote, I think it needs a bit of updating the text since 'several' years have passed. I can try to make time this week to do that. Another thing is rendering - I'm not sure how to make an icon that works for OSM-carto, probably not a big deal, but that would be handy if someone can do that. Thanks! --Russell Deffner (talk) 13:36, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
"Another thing is rendering" note that rendering is rarely important (except rare case where tag is impossible to use, usually with overcomplicated relations), here it is straightforward - it can be handled like any other shop. "works for OSM-carto" - with 400 usues it may be too early for a dedicated icon in this style (though it should be easy to make recognizable one) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:09, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Updated 3.14

Just FYI, I have edited the proposal text to get it a bit more up-to-date. Please take a review, I will ask for a short, second RFC on the mailing list in the next week or so. --Russell Deffner (talk) 22:33, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

Post-vote?

The voting time span has ended. A post-voting cleanup should be considered. U30303020 (talk) 17:44, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

Yes thank you everyone who voted; this tagging has been approved, just haven't had the time to return to this. At the moment, I don't have capacity to do all the clean-up part, so will mark it as Post-vote for now. --Russell Deffner (talk) 17:31, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
