How to tag specialisation in concrete or asphalt?

I was thinking doing something similar to established tagging craft=carpenter with carpenter=*. Possibly craft=paver combined with paver=asphalt or paver=concrete. Mxdanger (talk) 03:15, 9 June 2026 (UTC)

paver=* could be used for jobs: residential vs business vs public works. And scale: Some may not be advertised/specialized to serve individual home owners, only at least "medium-small" scale (ignoring large ones being some office=* / industrial=* ).

I would keep them in surface=* to be paver:surface=*

You'd have to show some examples of other craft=* or other type of top-level tags that has sub tagging like that. Not sure there's any tags that are used to differentiate between job types like that and why it would be necessary to add. Contractors generally do any job it's just based on price but that is not relevant information that should be added to OSM.

Please convince me why we should complicate things, like pricing and scale... and especially the suggestion for surface. We are not here to add every single surface like tagging an entire restaurant menu, but rather just the primary purpose of the paver. Mxdanger (talk) 01:11, 11 June 2026 (UTC)

Tag:craft=winery / Tag:craft=brewery drink:*=* ?

Other craft=* not having it yet doesn't mean they can't have it either. {craft=* is a less developed and worked category than shop=* , naturally having less details.

Your question is specialization, not whether they will "do any job". A larger contractor can certainly be specialized in those with more heavy machinery, large scale, and more expert professionals. It's termed "commercial" paving. Kovposch (talk) 08:07, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
