If used at all it should be "highway=chemin_de_ronde" not "highway=chemin de ronde". Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:15, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

English

Is there really no English term for that? We have values in English if possible at all Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:16, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Conflict

Note that such way can be tagged with highway=footway (or maybe in some cases highway=service). And this proposed tags blocks it Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:17, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Look Mateusz, I am well aware of my shortcomings in creation of something elaborate like this, but I hope I can answer some of your concerns:
  • 1) this feature is not a path or a footway, not even remotely close to those - it's an element of a defensive wall, often disconnected from other paths, extremly rarely with a free access, and in present times it is almost exclusively used by tourists; alone it has many different forms and features which means it should have "key:chemin de ronde" with some of these features as "values"; this way is more similar to "corridor" than to any other path;
  • 2) I used the lead paragraph to give all English lang. variation of its French name, which is common in history of architecture - I listed six such English variants of this name:
  • 3) this "underscore" issue is a result of a template given on page-creation - I simply let this be whatever the template on page creation offered, although I wondered why is that so.
As a relative newbie on this matter part of the project (I am, however, bit more experienced on mapping things) it confuses me that we are supposed to wait for editors to simply strat using specific names for elements and features to get them candidate for tag and keys creation - I mean, how we to expect editors to name this kind of object on their own if they are not offered such a tag while mapping - in this particular case, while I was mapping castles and defensive walls, I was expecting that this tag already existed, and when I realised that one that are offered do not fit the nature of this feature I tried to map as many as I alone could and then create a tag myself. Now, that obviously is not proper procedure and I was lacking proper way / line format that is distinctly "chemin_de_ronde" but I hoped to get, first some time to fix it, and maybe some help too. Anyway, I believe if you inform editors by offering them this specific tag they will use it when mapping corridors and way around the castles' battlements and defensive walls. Thanks for your attention.--Santasa (talk) 19:02, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
Looking at https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/668108935/history and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Walls_of_Dubrovnik.jpg - for me highway=footway mapping seems entirely correct and some extra tag not conflicting with highway=footway seems preferable. Maybe historic=chemin_de_ronde or chemin_de_ronde=yes or similar Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 19:11, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
To be honest, as an architect I think distinct key would be the best way of mapping this, however I wouldn't mind good compromise like some you are suggesting. Something else bothers me more, I am conflicted with two possible ways of tagging this feature: 1) as a highway; or 2) as a barrier or wall or defensive work which comprise these historic elements such as "city_wall", "castle_wall" "defensive_wall" (I am listing these from top of my head, so I am not sure if I mentioned them all and/or named them correctly). Just like historic = "fortified_tower" or "city_gate" that make a part of the "castle_wall" and "city_wall", so are "battlement" and "chemin de ronde" (or if we choose some of English name variants) also part of the fortification architecturally speaking - and of course,it is not unimportant that today's usage is very distinctive (tourism and rarely free access). We don't have to decide right now and/or alone, so we can discuss a bit more and wait and see if anyone else want to chip in some view on the matter.--Santasa (talk) 19:27, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
highway=footway + footway=chemin_de_ronde ?

This could work too, maybe this would be better in relation to highway (although historic=chemin_de_ronde can be useful; it's historic feature).--Santasa (talk) 23:43, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
