Well howdy! I'm Karl, a 20-something-year-old from the great state of Texas.

Areas I'm Mapping

I currently live in Holly Lake Ranch out in East Texas, a really confusing place for someone working on OSM, as it's unincorporated, a CDP, and a gated resort community, all of which aren't talked about much on the wiki. I'm working on adding local businesses in the surrounding area, mostly in Hawkins and Mineola. I also travel into Dallas on occasion, and am working a bit over there in North Dallas and north of Dallas.

Current Projects

A few of the projects I'm working on...

Wood County, Texas

Main article: Wood County, Texas

I'm working on mapping out Wood County, with landuses and landcover. Currently, I'm just working in the southern part of the county, and focusing on Holly Lake Ranch, but hopefully I'll get to the rest of the county.

Historic Downtown Mineola

I'm currently adding as much detail as I can to the Mineola Downtown Historic District (way 515690870). Especially so, with Wiki Loves Monuments going on right now (September 2017) in the United States.

Projects on my Wishlist

These are things I'd like to see, but don't know how to start.

DART Bus Routes

I'd like to eventually see a project to map out the DART bus system in Dallas, although:

  1. I'm very new to the OSM community
  2. I don't currently live in Dallas
  3. I have no idea how to start such a project.

If you'd like to help out with such a project, just let me know!

Civic Integration

I'd really like to get some local governments involved in the OSM community, whether at the city level, the county level, or maybe even higher, or apart from those, (i.e. transit authority, regional mobility authority, etc). The only problem is, I'm not sure where to start. A few things I believe I'd need to get together for them are as follows:

  • What are the benefits of being involved?
  • Why should they care about OSM?
  • How do they get started?
    • While I wouldn't mind teaching them what I know, I'm wondering if there's a course of some kind somewhere...

I'm sure there are more bullet points I could add too. If you have any ideas, let me know!

Destination Tagging

I'm thinking about starting a proposal for a new destination=* tag and/or tags for displaying the road signs you actually see (original discussion here). As with most things on this list, I'm not sure where to start. Granted, I haven't done a lot of looking on this one, and I'm sure it's on here somewhere.

I'm also probably going to be writing a guide on Relation:destination sign at some point, and when I do, I'll link it here.

United States Highway Functional Classification System

Main article: User:UltimateRiff/HFCS

I'd love for some reform in how we use the highway=* tag on roads here in the US. Namely, we use the system that the Federal Highway Administration uses, or at least criteria similar to the ones they use.
