WikiProject US National Parks
On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the "Organic Act" creating the National Park Service. The first National Park, however, was created much earlier than this: Yellowstone National Park was established by Congress on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was also the world's first national park.
The National Parks service is responsible for 124 historical, 75 monuments, 25 battlefields 18 preserves, 18 recreational area, 10 seashores, four parkways, four lakeshores, two reserves and 59 national Parks. This wiki will focus on the 59 National Parks.
WikiProject US National Parks is a WikiProject to engage mapping the National Parks.
The National Park Service creates wonderful PDF maps of the parks. Harpers Ferry Center is a one stop source for maps and park documentation. Some of those PDF documents are geospatial (geopdf) PDF. Once they are converted into geotiff format they can be used as a layer in JOSM to assist entering data. Use the US National Park Service Tagging as a guide when using NPS pdf maps to enter POI into OpenStreetMap.
National Park Services GIS Data is available for download. GIS data from the NPS is generally Public Domain. However, any import of the data should follow the Import/Guidelines.
