CoMaps is an open source, community-developed navigation app for walkers, drivers, and cyclists. The app offers worldwide offline maps based on OpenStreetMap data, and navigation with privacy - no location tracking, no data collection, and no ads. Most features operate without a data connection, ideal for travel on distant hiking trails or locations with poor connections. The app is free and is open-source software, with priority for community development and collaboration.

Since end of January 2026, CoMaps is also available for Linux via Flathub.

OSM Editing

The built in OSM Editor of CoMaps focuses on points of interest (POIs) and allows updating or adding places like restaurants or shops. Moreover, the deletion of a POI can be requested by submitting a note. The functionality is intentionally kept simple, so people with out detailed knowledge about OSM can use it as well.

Just as the rest of the app, the editor works without an internet connection. Editing is done based on the offline map data and changes are automatically uploaded to OSM later on, when a network connection is available again.

  1. Select the POI you want to edit and press "Edit Place" at the bottom of the details page

  2. Edit the POI details and press the check arrow to save your changes

  1. Select the rough location and press "Add place to OpenStreetMap" at the bottom of the details page
• 
  2. Use the cross hairs to select the precise location and make sure the POI is not already on the map to avoid duplicates
• 
  3. Select the category of the POI
• 
  4. Add details to the POI and save your changes using the check arrow
• 
  5. The new POI is now displayed on the map and will be uploaded to OSM in the background

Privacy policy

The app developers pledge to only request the bare minimum of permissions necessary to deliver the offline maps, and to ensure:

• No ads
• No tracking
• No data collection
• No registration
• No spam emails
• No bloatware

In January 2026, the team outlined more details about how it improved privacy in the app since the fork. Changes include the removals of the Kayak affiliate links that Organic Maps had introduced, removal of the Google Firebase and Fused Location dependencies, and rewriting the map-delivery server to remove data collection, as well as allowing people to self-host the map files. To make the self-hosting of maps easier, the CoMaps community has so far developed two tools, based on Python and Docker respectively.

Developer

CoMaps was founded in 2025 by former Organic Maps contributors. The Organic Maps codebase was forked due to concerns about the project's governance, transparency, and the potential for shareholder profit at the expense of the community. The CoMaps project was created, focusing on privacy, performance and community.
