The key type specifies a relation's type. See types of relations.

type=* is occasionally also used as an add-on tag to specify a "variant" of a feature category. This approach conflicts with its use of in relations and should be avoided. Also, for elements with multiple tags, it is not clear to which one it refers to. Instead, suffix-based *:type=* approach should be used:

<key> = <some_value>; <some_value>:type=*

For example, for categorization of man_made=tower objects, use tower:type=*.

For preference when devising new tagging approaches consider using one of these two other formats:

  • <key> = <some_value>; <some_value>:type=*
