The key food=yes/no is used to indicate whether a feature provides food.

This is useful on features which do not always serve food, such as amenity=cafe, amenity=bar and especially amenity=pub.

Rarely it has been used with tourism=* features such as tourism=wilderness_hut just to indicate whether any food is available.

The tag food=no is used on places where you would usually expect an option for food, but there isn’t any.

It is not useful at all to tag it where food is by definition available, for example on amenity=restaurant. Or where there is no reason to expect it, for example on landuse=farmland.

shop=food + food=prepared_meals was also proposed/used for type of shop selling prepared meals, not ready for eating immediately (and requiring for example heating/boiling or other simple preparation).
