organic

Proposed by: flaimo
Tagging: organic/fair_trade=no/yes/only
Applies to: node area
Definition: A tag to describe if a shop offers organic and/or fair trade products

Current situation

Currently there only is a shop=organic which coveres mainly food and a proposal for shop=fairtrade that hasn't been touched since 2009. Both are not flexible enough to represent the broad spectrum of shops offering fairtrade and/organic products. So rather than using a special tag for every kind of shop, this proposal suggest keys which are mapped in addition to the main shop=* key or certain amenity=* values (for example restaurants).

Advantages

Navigation

People with a priority on ethical living could further filter the result list of POIs to only display shops with organic and/or fair trade products while others could just display all kinds of shops without the criteria.

Maps

A broad spectrum of shops is already displayed in current maps, while separate shop keys for organic or fair trade shops would not show up by default.

Keys and values

Please note, that since the definition for organic and fair trade differ from country to country and vary from product group to product group, this proposal will and cannot define those terms. Normally such products and services are labeled explicitly as organic/fair trade.

Key Value Description
organic no The shop or restaurant offers no organic products at all or very little that is basically not worth mentioning (sometimes only used for marketing purposes for a limited amount of time).
organic yes The shop or restaurant usually offers some organic products. For example conventional supermarkets which offer a permanent product line of organic staple foot fall under that category.
organic only All or almost all of the products the shop or restaurant offers are organic. These institutions normally promote themself as "organic" (for example Whole Foods (USA), Denns (GER))
Key Value Description
fair_trade no The shop offers no fair trade products at all or very little that is basically not worth mentioning (sometimes only used for marketing purposes for a limited amount of time).
fair_trade yes The shop usually offers some fair trade products.
fair_trade only All or almost all of the products the shop offers are fair trade. These institutions normally promote themself as "fair trade".

Examples

shop=shoes + fair_trade=yes
A shoe shop that offers some shoes, that are fairtrade
shop=supermarket + organic=only
A organic only supermarket (covers the current shop=organic)
shop=farm + organic=only
A farm that directly sells organic only products to customers
shop=carpet + fair_trade=only
A shop which offers fair trade carpets only

Changes based on comments from the RFC phase

  • changed value exclusive to only (Tordanik)
  • refinement of value descriptions (Dieterdreist, Kay_D)
  • added definition of organic / fair_trade (IRC)
