An arm barrier (boom gate, boom barrier) is a bar, or pole pivoted (rotates upwards to open) in such a way as to allow the bar to block vehicular access through a controlled point. Combine with access=* where appropriate.

Note that "lift gate", term used in OSM tagging is not used in actual English.

How to map

Tag a node with barrier=lift_gate. A tiny proportion of cases (0.01%) tag a way instead.

Types

In addition to the basic tag barrier=lift_gate, you can add the type if you wish:

Key Value Element Comment Example Icon
lift_gate:type=* single node The road is blocked using one bar. None
lift_gate:type=* double node The road is blocked using two bars. None

Access

If no access tags are provided, generally motor_vehicle=private would be assumed. Since pedestrian and cycling access is generally physically possible for the majority of boom barriers, many mappers imply foot=yes + bicycle=yes; however, the access may be restricted or obstructed by other means. As can be seen from the examples below, a multitude of situations is possible, so explicit tagging of access is recommended.

Boom barrier that intentionally provides no obstacle for pedestrians and cyclists. Generally used to control access to territories with private parking but otherwise free access.

motor_vehicle=private + foot=yes + bicycle=yes, possibly also motorcycle=yes + moped=yes

Boom barrier that doesn't restrict access for pedestrians or cyclists, but neither provides a means to cycle past it without dismounting.

motor_vehicle=no + foot=yes + bicycle=dismount

Boom barrier with folding parts physically preventing pedestrian access when closed. Similar barrier when opened

access=private

Boom barrier which is physically surmountable by pedestrians, but anybody attempting that would likely be halted by guards from the adjacent amenity=security_booth.

access=private

node Boom barrier before a movable bridge that is open to traffic most of the time, but closed when the bridge is moved to allow a ship to pass.

access=yes, possibly with access:conditional=* tags if the timetable of closures is fixed and known.

Possible tagging mistakes

If you know places with this tag, verify if it could be tagged with another tag.
Automated edits are strongly discouraged unless you really know what you are doing!
