Use building:part=bridge for a bridge-like connector that is mapped as part of the adjoining building structure rather than as a separate building. It typically spans an open space and connects two buildings or two sections of a building above ground.

The tag describes the building structure. It does not by itself describe a routable way through the structure.

How to map

Draw the outline of the building part as an area and add building:part=bridge.

Building parts are normally associated with a building=* outline. A building relation can group a building outline and its parts, especially when a part extends outside the outline.

Since the building part normally does not start at ground level, add the applicable level and/or height tags described by Simple 3D Buildings:

• Use building:min_level=* together with building:levels=* when the floor levels are known. The value of building:levels=* includes the levels skipped below the building part and must be greater than building:min_level=*.
• Use min_height=* together with height=* when the heights are known. Both values are measured from the ground.

If the building part has a roof, describe it with the applicable roof tags from Simple 3D Buildings.

For example, the vertical extent of a connector that occupies one level above two skipped levels can be described with:

building:part=bridge
building:min_level=2
building:levels=3

Map any pedestrian route through the connector separately, using level=* and the applicable highway=* or indoor tags. Add bridge=*, covered=*, or layer=* only where they describe the route itself.

Similar tags

A connection that is open at the sides can use building:part=bridge even if it has a roof. Enclosed connections are also sometimes tagged this way. If the connection is fully enclosed and functions as an indoor corridor, consider using building:part=corridor instead. Describe an elevated corridor with the same paired level or height tags given above.

When a bridge-like connector is mapped as a separate building, building=bridge is an established alternative.

man_made=bridge describes the outline of a bridge structure in its own right and can group the routes or other features it carries. It is not limited to public roads and can also be used for short access bridges leading to building entrances across a ditch, light well, or similar gap. Such a bridge may be attached to a building without necessarily being a building part.

The distinction can be ambiguous in hybrid cases. The tags will often be alternatives, but combining them may be reasonable if the same outline genuinely represents both a building part and a bridge structure. This combination is uncommon and should not be assumed to be necessary. Where the building volume and bridge structure have different outlines, separate objects may be appropriate.
