Confusion with building:units=*

I don't undestrand why there is a different building:units and a building:flats tag. Shouldn't they be merged?

Maybe, note that both are result of imports. Doing this would require mechanical edit of one of tags. See Automated Edits code of conduct. Edit itself is quite easy to do, I would be able to do it easily - but it would require at least one of communities to be sure that they want it to be run Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 20:59, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
I too find this duality confusing and perceive no real difference between the two (non-native English speaker, though). However, only the "flats" variation is mentioned in building#Additional_Attributes=* which terminology-wise also seems to be more in line with the existing addr:flats=* and the convention of using British English for tags and wiki. I can find no documented reasoning behind the introduction of the "units" variation which seems to be closely connected to the LA import (and which is also more recently documented, 2016 vs. 2014). In line with this and building=* I've added mention of flats in the building:apartments#Additional_Building_Attributes=* to indicate this preference. As a consequence I've also added mention of units and its non-reccommendation at building:flats#See_Also=* and the opposite at building:units=*. I hope this is in line with what others perceive and that it clears up some confusion.

Dont merge them. IMHO we need both and building:units=* beeing repurposed as a "number of residential or commercial units" in a building. Flats is more specific in terms of residential usage. I was looking for tags like this for Fiber Planning and number of "units" is the base information for planning fiber count to a building. Flohoff (talk) 09:14, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Synonym?

How is this different from building=apartments? They are effectively en-gb (flats) and en-us (apartments) terms for the same thing. SK53 (talk) 19:43, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

No? This counts the number of flats inside. --- Kovposch (talk) 07:02, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
