Talk:Tag:shop=car repair
maybe add some information like
service:repair=* or service=* with values tyres, electrical, engine... some shop only do tyres repair -Yod4z 14:53, 25 October 2012 (BST)
Overlap with shop=car
There's a clash of definitions, or an overlap at least, with Tag:shop=car. But maybe we just need to adjust the definition of shop=car. See Talk:Tag:shop=car#Relation to shop=car_repair.
These things would be less likely to happen, and less problematic if tag documentation pages like this were not left completely empty for so long.

Add the value vehicle_type=*
To add a vehicle_type. This should stick to the list to be seen in "access". i.e. vehicle_type=hgv or vehicle_type=motorhome. This is needed for repair shops, which only repair trucks for example. --MeastroGlanz (talk) 11:25, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
- This is a very good question. How to mark specialized workshops?
- a) repair shops for cars, e.g. Renault, Volkswagen, etc.:
- b) repair shops for lorries eg: Iveco, Man, Volvo
- c) repair shops for agricultural vehicles and machines.
- d) repair shops for cars & lorries...
- For truck repairs there's shop=truck_repair. It would be nice to see a scheme with shop=repair and the possible types described with repair=*, but I guess that boat sailed along ago... I wanted to map a repair shop dedicated to agricultural machinery, but I found not suitable tag. Maybe shop=agricultura_machines_repair? --AntMadeira (talk) 21:16, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
Fuel
"Some mechanics may also sell gasoline, although they have fewer pumps than amenity=fuel. " - shouldn't this be changed to encourage users to map the amenity=fuel separately to the shop? GinaroZ (talk) 23:31, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
- Fixed, thanks Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:53, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
Acceleration of tag service:vehicle:xxx=yes
There should be added tag widely used and already implemented into official OsmAnd. Those tags describe precisely what service is provided for customer in shop.
From tag info 1 457 service:vehicle:car_repair 761 service:vehicle:oil_change 569 service:vehicle:tyres 415 service:vehicle:used_car_sales 388 service:vehicle:new_car_sales 385 service:vehicle:diagnostics 373 service:vehicle:brakes 355 service:vehicle:car_parts 352 service:vehicle:repairs 348 service:vehicle:inspection 244 service:vehicle:batteries 241 service:vehicle:air_conditioning 216 service:vehicle:body_repair 185 service:vehicle:electrical 153 service:vehicle:tires 132 service:vehicle:wheels 96 service:vehicle:glass 84 service:vehicle:truck_repair 60 service:vehicle:muffler 58 service:vehicle:alignment 50 service:vehicle:Transmission_Repair
- This is currently in discussion, see [[1]]
- IMHO the tagging scheme for services should generally be standardized for all shop types, at least the tags which aren't specific
- *sales=*
- *repair=*
- *rental=*
- *parts=*
- *type=*

- IMHO, adding service:vehicle:car_repair to a place already tagged as shop=car_repair is extremely redundant and risks people removing the more legitimate and widely used shop tag out of ignorance or "tag favoritism." While it might be worth having a service:vehicle type tagging scheme for things that aren't covered by already existing tags, they shouldn't be used to replace tags that already describe the feature in a better way. --Adamant1 (talk) 10:22, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Should a Towing company be tagged as a car repair shop?
How would one map the location of a towing company? Some have been mapped as shop=car_repair, but many towing companies do not perform repairs.
See also https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/47158/cartruck-towing-business
- How about car:transport=towing ?
- So you would be able to filter for it whatever shop is "on top" ? (and other transport types could be considered)

Good question. IMHO no, businesses that do nothing but towing should not be tagged as car_repair, but I have been struggling with getting independent towing services listed in searches in OsmAnd. Unfortunately, it won't find them unless the business also has that tag. There are many businesses that do only one thing--vehicle towing. There are other businesses that sell only services, not products. For example hairdresser, embroiderer, many others. It should have its own shop tag. shop=vehicle_towing. Or, since it's rather specialized, and requires specialized equipment, it could be tagged as a craft i.e. craft=vehicle_towing. Pick one. For shops that provide many services including towing, the service:vehicle:towing tag could still be used.
I think it is important, because it's not a service you need very often, but when you need it, you really need it. So a simple search should find any available towing companies in the area. And right now when I do a search in OsmAnd for "towing" or "towing service", all that it finds is towing for free flying sport. A search for "car towing" brings up only those shops that also have the car_repair tag. And a search for "vehicle towing" brings up a mish-mosh of unrelated stuff. That's just not right. This issue is important for people on the road using only offline maps on their phone with no internet connection, and it needs to be ironed out so that all apps will use that specific tag for that purpose. The sooner the better. Boxslinger (talk) 20:22, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
- With "whatever shop is on top" I meant to have a "service" key which is independent from the shop type. So whatever business they mainly run, you may filter for those who also offer towing (even if they mainly run a shop=trailer or anything else). I don't think it's a craft, or has it to be learned ? I'm just uncertain whether car:transport=* or car:logistics=* should be preferred. The first one is easier to understand, the latter already exists as office=logistics rtfm Rtfm (talk) 20:51, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
I also had this problem several times – to find a good tag for a company which provides ONLY towing services (no car repair or other services). It seems that there is a proposal for a supplementary tag (e.g. for car_repair) with "service:towing=yes", but this does not help in this case. I found out that the only tag which really is some kind of "in use", is shop=towing (taginfo of today: 40 uses). Another is office=towing with 33 uses. And there are also 6 uses for amenity=towing (a comparison: amenity=driving_school). I think I will use one of these tags for such a company. A reason for office=towing would be that they are not selling their product (= the towing service) at this location (where the company is resided) compared to e.g. shop=car_repair. And I would not use amenity=towing, because there is no eductation or something like that. Most of the time (in my cases), there was an office, their special towing vehicles, their equipement and sometimes also cars/vehicles which have been towed at these places. And their service can be reached by a 24/7 phone number – so you will have contact to the office (or a night service/emergency service) in a normal case, I guess. --Goodidea (talk) 14:23, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- +1 for office=towing since places that provide towing aren't usually shops. In the cases where where a car repair place does towing though, I don't see anything with just using towing=*. IMO there's zero point in adding the extra and needlessly redundant word "service." Since it's kind of implied that it's a service in the fact that the car repair shop is providing it in the first place. --Adamant1 (talk) 22:13, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
