Deletion/Merge

Why have this page been marked for deletion? I know it is more like a discussion than a documentation, but doesn't that rather call for a clean up? --Skippern 20:33, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Yeah somebody incorrectly applied Template:delete here when at most they were proposing a deletion, so should have used Template:Delete proposal, but in fact they were actually suggesting a merge with Tag:sport=scuba diving.
This merge idea is also discussed over at Talk:Tag:sport=scuba diving, the red box appears to have been added near the top of this page. This is a mess. Discussions should be on the 'Talk' page. The information that the red box contains is a fundamental part of the definition of a what is meant by this tag, so basically belongs as the first sentence on this page, except that it's not clear if everybody is in agreement that this tag is about diving off diving boards/rocks. So this is a bit of a mess.
It strikes me that this rather like the situation with sport=football. Over the years we had plenty of debates, but essentially agreed that the tag was ambiguous and so we just stopped using it and stated that sport=soccer and sport=american_football are preferred. Do we have a similar situation here?

It's a tricky one because there isn't actually a word in the english language to disambiguate properly that I can think of. Notice that wikipedia has a diving article and then a underwater diving article. I suppose "underwater diving" is mostly equivalent, but ever so sightly more inclusive than "scuba diving" (includes deep sea diving, and other uncommon variants). But the real problem is, diving as in jumping in from a height (a diving board or off a cliff) perhaps with acrobatics involved... there's no word for that other than "diving". Something like "acrobatic diving" could try to sums it up in two words, but that's clumsy. It's not in common parlance, and may not be correct (perhaps sometimes jumping off a cliff isn't particularly acrobatic). Can anyone think of a different english word/words for it? -- Harry Wood 13:24, 16 October 2012 (BST)

Diving means Wasserspringen, Turmspringen, Kunsstspringen (there is no OSM-tag for).
Cliff diving means Klippenspringen: sport=cliff_diving
Scuba diving means Tauchen: sport=scuba_diving
I merged "diving" to "scuba_diving" and "cliff_diving" and deleted the depreciated stuff here.
If "sport=diving" counts zero, I think we can delete this page.

Mmm. So currently the page doesn't give an alternative sport=x tag for Wasserspringen:

This is a problem. Not sure what the best solution is

Hi Harry,
"diving" as "jumping" has three classic olympic disciplines:

  • 1 m Duraflex springboard
  • 3 m Duraflex springboard
  • 10 m platform

In German we differ "Kunstspringen" (1m and 3m from springboard) and "Turmspringen" (10m from platform). (also 5m and 7,5m is called "Turmspringen", but not olympic).

New olympic diciplines since 2000:

  • Syncronisation diving (3 m Duraflex springboard)
  • Syncronisation diving (10 m platform)

In the non-olympic area we have:

There is no tagging scheme about.
For diving towers (5m, 7,5m, 10m) and competition springboards in public swimming pools it would be nice to have a such tagging scheme.
(but I hop we don't get all 1m springboards in each pool rendered in the map ;-) )

diving=no

Another thing to concider are possibly areas prohibited for diving (i.e. state reserves).

For example in Point Lobos State Reserve there's an area where diving is prohibited:

You mean sport=scuba_diving = (forbidden | prohibited | not aloud?) - until now there is no such tag in OSM... --Markus (talk) 15:38, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Tagging

Could someone make a full list of tags for diving? Only tag I can think of as very important would be depth=* and shop=diving though there can probably be a lot more. I am not into rating of dive locations, but this should be tagged in some way where rating is known. --Skippern 09:45, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

See
shop=scuba_diving

Map features

This tag is suggested on Map Features, but the documentation suggests sport=scuba_diving instead which is not mentioned on Map Features. Skippern 08:48, 6 April 2012 (BST)
