Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players on a large soccer pitch, who try to kick the ball into the opponent's goal.. The standard dimensions within the pitch boundary lines are 90–120 m in length and 45–90 m in width.[1]
Note: While called "football" (fussball, fotball, ...) in many countries, it is best to tag it as "soccer" to avoid confusion with other usages of "football". The OpenStreetMap tagging guidelines have always been to go for UK-English spellings. However, in this special case it is far too confusing for some other English speaking countries, and it has been decided to use soccer to mean this kind of football.
The sport=soccer tag should only be used for features (pitches, clubs etc.) dedicated to association football. For other variants of soccer, use:
sport=minisoccer- A sport played by 2 teams of 6 players on a smaller (outdoor or indoor) artificial turf or grass pitch with touchlines and a rectangular penalty area, who try to kick the ball into the opponent's goal.sport=futsal- A sport played by two teams of 5 players on a (mainly indoor) hard-surface pitch with touchlines and a D-shaped penalty area, who try to kick the ball into the opponent's goal.sport=arena_soccer- A sport played by two teams of 6 players on an (mainly indoor) artificial turf court with surrounding boards, who try to kick the ball into the opponent's goal.sport=five-a-side- An informal variant ofsport=futsal,sport=minisoccerorsport=arena_soccerwithout strict rules or with different markings, played by two teams of 5 players on a rectangular indoor or outdoor pitch (with or without surrounding boards), who try to kick the ball into the opponent's goal. How to map
Since sport=soccer is a non-physical tag, it should be combined with other (physical) tags; e.g.:
leisure=pitch- For a volleyball court - an area designed for practising sport, normally designated with appropriate markings.leisure=practice_pitch- A small place set up for practicing a given sport, but not appropriate for a full game.leisure=sports_hall- A large single room that is suitable for practising sports indoors and doesn't have a "centre" character. Soccer pitch
If there is some physical outline of the pitch or painted line markings, draw an area around it and add leisure=pitch and sport=soccer. If it is not possible to draw the exact shape of the pitch, place a node at its centre.
For a smaller soccer pitch consider use leisure=practice_pitch and sport=soccer.
