Proposal

Explicitly mark the tag amenity=swimming_pool as discouraged by changing the wiki page to contain only the following text:

The use of this tag is discouraged, use leisure=swimming_pool instead.

Rationale

For a long time, the tags amenity=swimming_pool and leisure=swimming_pool have been existed in parallel for the same concept. Historically, amenity=swimming_pool used to be the more popular tag, but usage has shifted to leisure=swimming_pool, with amenity=swimming_pool now making up less than 8% of the instances.

Hopefully explicitly marking the tag as discouraged speeds up the process of changing the amenity tag into the leisure tag (however note that the current proposal does not include a mechanical edit proposal). Having to support only one instead of two tags makes life easier for data consumers such as renderers.

In addition, (new) mappers might find it easier if there is only one page for this concept, instead of two. Furthermore, having only one page for this concept makes maintenance of the wiki page easier.

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. It would be cool to get a warning in JOSM about the discourage of the tag as soon as the proposal is accepted. --Werner2101 (talk) 08:40, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
I am planning to file a request for a deprecation warning in JOSM when this proposal is accepted. --Math1985 (talk) 11:36, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I prefer the term "amenity" for a swimming pool. The term "leisure" implies that the pool is for leisure use, but that is not always the case. A pool may be used solely for training and/or competition, which is not leisure. The term "amenity" implies nothing about the purpose of the pool, only that it exists. --Dr Centerline (talk) 18:38, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. The proposal reduces tag fragmentation, thanks. All sports features (track, pitch, sports_centre, stadium) are under the leisure key, including all levels of training and competition. There is no evidence that those tagged as amenity are not used for leisure. --Polarbear w (talk) 19:13, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. This proposal is formally flawed, as there should be at least be 2 weeks between RFC and voting start. But contentwise I agree with the proposal. amenity=swimming_pool and leisure=swimming_pool are synonyms. Those who refer to professional swimmers certainly also demand for amenity=pitch, amenity=sports_centre etc., because there are professionals in every sport. --Fkv (talk) 23:01, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. leisure=pitch is already used for competitive sports ! So leisure=swimming_pool 'fits' in OSM terms for both recreational and competitive use as OSM has chosen not to distinguish between the two. If there is a need then propose a new sub key, say, competitive=yes. Warin61 (talk) 00:08, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal.--Julliwodbcn --Not all the swiming pools are for leisure, could be used fot training, injury recover, medical reasons.... the word leisure connotates another things, and amenity just means the pool is there.
