This key sets the legal access restriction for mofas. A mofa is a low powered motorcycle or bicycle with auxilary motor (combustion or electric), usually with a maximum design speed of around 25 km/h. The abbreviation is short for the German "motorfahrrad". In Dutch mofas would be translated as "snorfietsen"; which is distinct from mopeds ("bromfietsen").

In some countries(which?) mofa is a sub-class of moped=* (and moped=* is a sub-class of motorcycle=*) with less stringent license requirements, but still subject to the same access restrictions. In other countries mofas are treated the same as bicycles except for specific restrictions on using the motor. At least in the later it is necessary to tag this separate from motorcycle=* or moped=*.

Depending on the jurisdiction, low-powered "pedelecs" (tagged in OSM with electric_bicycle=* and speed_pedelec=*) might be subject to the same regulations.

Regional definitions and documentation

  • Switzerland
  • Belgium
    • mofa=* is equal to Class A mopeds. These are all vehicles with two or three wheels with a maximum cylinder capacity of 50 cc or an electric motor and with a maximum speed of 25 km / h. For class A mopeds you do not need a driver's license.
    • Relevant legislation: dutch / french
    • In the past, Class A mopeds have been tagged with moped_a=*. We suggest to not use this tag any longer, in order to conform to the internationally more accepted mofa=*
    • See moped=* for tagging of Class B mopeds.
  • The Netherlands
    • mofas ("snorfietsen") follow largely the same access restrictions (including compulsory use of cycleways) as bicycles,
      • except for cycleways with a G13 sign,
      • mofas are banned from the majority of cyclepaths witin the ringway A10 in Amsterdam,
      • except when use of the motor is expressly forbidden
    • The OB02 "onderbord", which depicts a bicycle, is also applicable for mofa's
    • Relevant legislation: Reglement verkeersregels en verkeerstekens 1990
