Indicates whether it is physically possible to use a bicycle there, regardless of whether it is legally allowed, for which bicycle=* is to be used.
Consider adding description=* or note=* to add details if physical possibility / legality mismatch.
Common values
- yes - it is physically possible to use bicycle there (regardless of whether it is legal or not)
- no - it is not physically possible to pass with bicycle there in any way (even if law allows it)
- carried - it is physically possible to carry bicycle there, but not cycle on it (regardless of whether it is legal or not)
Issues & alternatives
Note however that "bicycle" as a term encompasses everything from children bicycles with 12" wheels and folding bikes, via 26" MTB and 28" hybrids, all the way to recumbent bicycles, tandems and cargo bikes. bicycle:physical=* is trying to treat them as they were all of the same size, which can be problematic unless specified value applies to all possible bicycle sizes (which is rarely the case).
- One alternative for some situations (e.g. would the bicycle physically fit in the elevator, regardless of legality of that act? for highway=elevator) is to tag physical dimensions of elevator instead (i.e. width=*+length=*+height=*) or its human-capacity (capacity=* or capacity:persons=* if signed) as easier-to-determine proxy, as those methods are verifiable, and everybody can compare them to their specific use case.
- Another alternative to bicycle:physical=* might be using mtb=*, which is not very clearly defined either, but common consensus on its wiki seem to be that it "points more towards practical suitability than legal access-restrictions". Using mtb=* would mostly solve the issue with "which bicycle type are we talking about?" (while 26" S-sized MTB is certainly smaller than 29" XXL-sized DH MTB, the difference is not nearly as huge as e.g. children 12" bike vs. cargo bike, and one can always take worst case i.e. "does every size of MTB fit? yes!" as requirement for mtb=yes).
