Service area (also known as travel plaza, rest and service area, service station, truck stop) are places along a road, usually a motorway or dual carriageway, where drivers can stop to refuel or charge their vehicles, have a rest or take refreshments. They usually consist of, at minimum, a petrol station, parking facilities, a place to eat and some public toilets. Also commonly found at services are shops, showers and an ATM. These are often located in the USA on Turnpikes (including Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana), and all along the Tollway system of Japan (where exiting and reentering the toll system would incur additional tolls), and are abbreviated SA.
For a rest area with no petrol station, use highway=rest_area
.
How to map
Draw area marking this feature. It is also OK to set a node at its center, if mapping as area is impossible.
Tags to use in combination
name=*
- The name of the services.operator=*
- The company or organization that the services are run by.toilets=yes/no
- if there are toiletsshower=yes/no
- whether a shower is available.
More features needed
The junction way from the highway is mapped with highway=motorway_link
and where pedestrians are allowed it is tagged highway=service
. Another addition such as service=parking_aisle
is only suitable for subordinate tramlines in the parking lot.
If exits to services areas are considered to qualify as motorway junctions (it appears there is no consensus on this), then this is mapped with
highway=motorway_junction
. Add name=*
in the form "Services area xyz". But no ref=*
is set.

Notes
highway=service
— not to be mixed up with! Usehighway=service
