A trailer park (also known as a mobile home park or caravan park) is a residential area consisting of prefabricated houses or static caravans (mobile homes) on small lots. Whereas caravan sites or RV parks (tourism=caravan_site) are primarily intended for short-term recreational stays, trailer parks are typically for longer-term stays. Some are reserved for retirees or, in an area with high housing prices, those eligible for affordable housing programs.

How to map

From the air, a trailer park can be easy to spot from a very regular pattern of streets and houses.

Map an area that includes the lots and any neighborhood amenities, then add landuse=residential residential=trailer_park. Set name=* to the trailer park's name. If the entire trailer park shares the same street address, add address tags on the area.

Map the streets and footpaths that provide access throughout the trailer park. If it is a large trailer park in which the streets' names appear in mailing addresses, it may be appropriate to tag each street as highway=residential. Otherwise, use highway=service (without service=*). If a speed limit is posted at the entrance, add maxspeed=* to each of the streets within. traffic_calming=bump and traffic_calming=hump may be appropriate as well.

Tag the leasing office as office=property_management, along with the trailer park's name and address.

The trailer park may have neighborhood amenities such as a swimming pool (leisure=swimming_pool) or playground (leisure=playground). In most trailer parks, due to high building density, residents send and receive mail at community mailboxes (cluster boxes) near the community entrance, at street corners, or at regular intervals along streets. [1] Tag these mailboxes as amenity=letter_box.

For additional detail, map each building in the trailer park as an area. Tag prefabricated houses as building=house building:prefabricated=yes and static caravans as building=static_caravan. Use addr:unit=* for unit numbers that appear in mailing addresses or ref=* for some other kind of lot number.

History

Many mobile home parks in the United States were imported from GNIS as place=hamlet points and had to be remapped as residential landuse areas. [2]

amenity=trailer_park was proposed in 2010, and residential=mobile was proposed the following year.
