Whoever's tagging things based on landsat

Umm, please stop? Tagging mountain ranges as glaciers is not real helpful. Drawing circles around every area with houses and arbitrarily decided whether something is a town or a village or a suburb, and not putting names on them isn't real helpful either. People in Kopavogur, Garðabær and Hafnafjörður probably don't like being called suburbs. And if you don't have a keyboard method that lets you use ð, þ and æ, please don't just put a squished into english version. Kpalsson 13:07, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

What is the purpose of those ways that surround urban areas and have been tagged as "place=city" anyway? I don't see it rendering as anything and they are usually very crudely drawn by the low-res (and old) Yahoo imagery. --Bjarki S 17:29, 7 April 2008 (BST)

kaplakriki

It's a set of traffic lights! Why did someone turn it into a nice set of freeway connecting lanes? It gives completely the wrong idea, though it sure does neatly lay on top of the gps tracks.

roads, types, labels and examples

We're narrowing in on the "final" guidelines for roads and labels. Current consensus below is pretty solid for numbered roads, still a bit of work to do with jeep tracks and rough roads.

city roads

Should we use highway=tertiary for the major roads leading into a residential area? They're not major enough to count as secondary, but much more important than residential.

  • Agreed, and I think that's been getting done a lot. It would be nice to try and make this a bit more consistent, particularly in reykjavik, where we started with just primary and secondary, then added trunk, and then tertiary, it's a bit haywire at the moment :) Kpalsson 18:12, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
    • I agree. But we need some sort of a guidline. Where is the boundary between residential and tertiary (and between tertiary and secondary). E.g., should Gamla Hringbraut be tertiary or secondary? Should Háteigsvegur be residential or tertiary? Þórir Már 10:00, 3. July 2008 (UTC)

unnumbered roads, jeep tracks, farm roads, and everything else

Þorir's propasal

Paved unnumbered roads, such as roads leading up to farms.

Unpaved unnumbered roads.

In short, all unpaved roads get a surface=unpaved tag.

For unnumbered 4x4 tracks I think we should use the highway=track tag along with the tracktype tag. But before we can do that we will have to add a few more grades to the tracktype tag.

F-roads need a new tag. I suggest we add highway=froad as a proposed feature.

Karl's comments

Þorir, if you're using unclassified for an unpaved, unnumbered farm road, how do we distinguish that from a track? I think perhaps unnumbered unpaved roads leading up to farms should just be marked as a track, as they're almost always unpaved anyway. Perhaps mark them unclassified if they are paved, and track if unpaved? This then moves down smoothly into the mountain tracks, based on their quality

Secondly, I've just finished trying this out, using highway=secondary, and surface=unpaved or no surface tag, for sections of highway 85, norðausturlandsvegur, and although the logical tagging is great, mapnik is not making any use of the surface tag, the entire highway 85 looks the same. Do we know if this going to be changed? It sort of ruins our nice plan :(

f roads, and track levels

We've got a lot of levels of roads left really....

  • unpaved and paved roads leading up to farms.
  • F roads as a whole
  • non f-road jeep tracks
  • non f-road, non farm road, potentially 2wd tracks. (Langanes, kaldakinn, etc)

Even f roads, need a level, as some of them are 2wd in good conditions. As a whole, OSM needs to defer to www.vegagerdin.is for current conditions, but the fixed signs are probably useful for defining the levels...

There's a series of signs that are posted in the country advising how serious the road is, starting from

  • Seinfarinn Vegur (Solid 2wd)
  • Illfær Vegur (Solid 4wd)
  • (can't find the name) (Solid 4wd, with fords)

I can't find these signs displayed in any of my road sign books or brochures right now unfortunately, but they definitely exist in the country. (I think there's 3 or 4 levels) For example, on Langanes, the official road 869 ends at Heiðarnes, and there is a sign marked Seinfarinn Vegur on the continuation of the track. The road is rough, but passable in 2wd (if you know what you're doing) Then at Skoruvík, another 20km down the road, the road deteriorates and another sign is posted, (I think it was a different sign to Illfær Vegur, but can't recall right now)

I'd like to use these markers, where possible, as the "track grade"

Highway classification

Hello guys, I just stumbled upon this awesome project a couple of days ago and I think I am already addicted. I've drawn a bunch of roads and streets based on other people's GPS tracks. I'm wondering about our system of classifying roads, I think the current one is less than ideal. According to this, the classification should reflect the actual conditions of a given road rather than relying on a legal/administrative classifications. Classifying roads by their numbers (single, double or triple digit) is not helpful in many cases, there are many triple-digit roads that are wider and carry more traffic than the remote parts of route #1. The Icelandic Road Administration (Vegagerðin) has its own way of classification that gives more prominence to the actual importance and conditions of roads, it can be seen on this map.

I suggest the following classification of roads based on the terms that Vegagerðin uses:

  • Trunk - Major arteries in the Greater Reykjavík area as well as the rural stofnvegir that have been widened to 4 lanes (such as Reykjanesbraut).
  • Primary - Other stofnvegir, this includes all of road #1, most double digit roads and some triple digit roads.
  • Secondary - tengivegir, mostly 3 digit roads but includes some double digit ones as well
  • Tertiary - landsvegir F-roads

--Bjarki S 23:20, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

You're right, but I think in general, the number of digits pretty much says the same thing. There's a few 2 digit roads that should be primary, but by and large, they are secondary roads. There's a few three digit roads that are secondary, but the vast majority really are tertiary roads. These exceptions should always be treated as exceptions anyway. (öxi should be a secondary, reykjanesbraut should be primary) Following the vegagerðin map basically just gives us two categories of general roads, and I think we should have three. The ring road, vs the roads to sauðakrókur, grundafjörður et al, vs the road to Látrabjarga, Reykjanesvíti, and so on, and then a fourth category for the f-roads and jeep tracks. This, combined with the surface=paved/unpaved, I think gives us the depth and clarity we need. I definitely agree though, some roads should be promoted/demoted, the number of digits in the road number was never meant to be a hard and fast rule. Kpalsson 13:07, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

It's a logical system. The only thing that bugs me is how the zoom levels work out for our country. Zoom 7 is the farthest out where primary routes are visible. I can't fit the whole country in the map at once at that zoom and the only visible roads are the ring road and Reykjanesbraut (which is now marked as a trunk route). I would expect at least the main roads in Snæfellsnes, Westfjords, Tröllaskagi, the northeast and Eastfjords to be visible at that level. You have to go to zoom 9 to see those secondary routes, which is pretty close. Anyways. That is a problem with the rendering, not the classification of roads. --Bjarki S 21:46, 8 April 2008 (BST)
This bothers me too, but the only way around it is to upgrade all the roads to things like trunk and motorway, and I really don't feel that's the right thing to do. Same with town names, I don't really want to call everything a city, it's a bit misleading, but calling villages villages they simply don't show up until you're on top of them. I'd really like all of the iceland area to have it's low zoom regenerated completely with a different set of rules that slide all the "min zoom level" numbers up a bit.
At the very least, the roads classified as "Aðalbraut" (see list should be at least secondary even though some of them are 3-digit and one is even 4-digit. This is the approach I've taken in Eyjafjörður where roads nr. 821, 823 and 829 are aðalbrautir. It does them better justice as they are paved, wide and good roads by Icelandic standards. --Bjarki S 18:32, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

GPS

Hvaða GPS-tæki eru menn helst að nota og með hverju mælið þið? --Bjarki S 21:46, 8 April 2008 (BST)

  • I use a garmin geko 201, set to points by time, 1 second between points. I have a power cable for the car, and also use it with batteries in a waterproof bag while hiking.
  • Ég keypti Garmin GPSmap 60CSx á ebay og hef verið mjög ánægður með það: Garmin GPSmap 60CSx Það er líka stór plús með Garmin tækin að það er auðvelt að setja OSM kortin inn á þau. Það er mjög gaman að sjá götur og fleira sem maður sjálfur hefur kortlagt á GPS tækinu sínu.--Þórir Már 18:25, 15 Júlí 2008 (UTC)
Er með Garmin Nũvi 710 frá pabba, aðeins að prófa það áður en ég kenni honum á það. Virðist virka auðveldlega, fór t.d. í smá ferð inn á fjöll með það um daginn. Track'aði fyrir mig af stað en virtisti svo hætta (.gpx-skjalið sýndi allavega ekki meira) án þess að láta mig vita eða hætta að teikna línuna og virkaði bara skemmtilega. :)
--Bjarki S 20:57, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Garmin map of Iceland

I also added a link to the project page but I suppose it's neat to announce it here too. I've started to make daily maps of Iceland for Garmin devices, see Garmin map of Iceland. ---Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 01:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Now you can download experimental routable map of Iceland. It is distributed as an MapSource installer. I haven't tested it yet but I used the routable map of germany from the same source. ---Daníel G

Þetta er mjög áhugaverð vinna. Það eru fullt af kortagögnum sem eru í eigu sveitafélaga og annara fyrirbæra sem eru ekki landmælingar og aðrir sem við vitum að við fáum ekkert út úr nema með lagabreytingum. Það er mjög þarft verkefni að safna saman lista yfir þessa aðila og senda á þá fyrirspurnir um hvort við megum ekki nota gögnin þeirra.
Það er örruglega hægt að sannfæra mörg lítil sveitarfélög og bæi, gögn sem er núna aðeins verið að nota fyrir t.d. aðalskipulag gætum við sett á OSM og fyrirtæki og einstaklingar í viðkomandi bæjum gætu svo notað þá t.d. til að sýna ferðamönnum hvar hvað er í bænum. Ætti að vera auðvelt að selja fólki hugmyndina á einhverjum þannig nótum. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 04:12, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

While I was on holiday

I mapped some of the footways around city camping , and different paths on Videy Island based on what I saw (not on your conventions) feel free to adapt if needed.I also ran the marathon and will add the footways it ran on. I'll upload the gpx files (not the marathon because it 'll add a lot of garbage data. --PhilippeP 18:14, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

I looked at some of your edits and they do look very useful indeed, nice to get some of that camping site fleshed out in Particular. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 04:08, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Glad I can be helpfull in mapping such a beautiful country :) --PhilippeP 11:29, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
I just uploaded some traces I made around the south of Iceland, I'm impressed with the work already done and the level of detail , I tried the waypoint feature of my gps logger to mark the passage from road to piste (Road 42) and it was already correctly mapped !! BTW on the same road, around the turnabouts when exiting Hafnarfjördur to Krusavik, the 42 is splitted in two times one lane in reality, but still mapped as a two lanes way in OSM. Is it by convention or is it an not yet mapped detail ?? (For info : My Iceland Trace--PhilippeP 09:45, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
A road should be split into two or more parts whenever that fits with reality, i.e. it should be divided if you can't cross between the two lanes and in one part when you can. If a road is incorrectly split in some parts you should join it or split it up as appropriate.
A lot of these are wrongly mapped, especially in the capital region when a road may be split up for a few hundred meters, joined, split again, etc. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 16:14, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok , I'll split what i saw when needed ... Done !
I've also added the roads that goes from F225 to Mnt.Hekla (to the top), from F225 to Afangagil, and from F208 to Eldgjà(F223) (as unclassified/unpaved) If anyone, can check, adapt and correct--PhilippeP 17:09, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Tagging of maritime borders + admin level

I see on Key:boundary that Iceland have defined EEZ as admin level 1, this conflicts with two points as I see it, first that EEZ is not an administrative division, and second that admin level 1 should be reserved for something higher than national border (i.e., if EU is accepted as a higher level of administration). There are at the moment a vote on how to tag Maritime borders, I suggest that you take a look at that, and hopefully leave a vote. The vote is over the proposal that I feel was most logical on how to tag the various levels of maritime borders, and in accordance with the UN convention of borders at sea. --Skippern 11:44, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

boundary=maritime <- should be of interest for you --Skippern 10:34, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Any plans to import landuse data (CLC)?

Iceland is apparently one of the few countries left which don't show landuse on the map. The Corine Land Cover (CLC) data of the EU covers Iceland as well. Am I the first one coming up with this proposal? I would find that odd. --Tilusnet 17:56, 24 June 2011 (BST)

JOSM translation

Icelandic is currently #7 on our list of potential future JOSM translations. 2000 core strings must be translated for a new language to be added. We'd love to see the Icelandic community complete the translation so we could add this new language to JOSM. See JOSM wiki for details and Launchpad to translate more strings. --Don-vip (talk) 01:56, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
