highway=motorway只能標記路徑，標示境內的最高等級道路。

一般而言，highway=motorway應該只用於標記完全控制出入口的道路或部分限制出入口的道路，視地方的習慣而異。

通常政府公告指定完全控制出入口的道路，並成為國家級的正式道路，常稱為「高速公路（Motrway、Freeway、Expressway）」。高速公路常具有獨立的交通規則，例如哪些車輛可以行駛高速公路，禁行自行車、行人、家禽、馬匹等。

此種道路常由法律特別指定，並有特別適用的法規。一般而言，歸類為highway=motorway的道路常有車輛或交通種類的通行限制，例如禁止行人、自行車、家禽、馬匹等通行。

能夠歸類為高速公路的限制通行道路包含以下道路：

• 通常類似於控制出入口道路，且無路口控制（如交通號誌、圓環、停止標誌、停止標線等）
• 一般至少有單向雙線道以上的車道數，並具有一定程度的車道隔離。
• 具有僅供服務用途的通道，例如為非住宅產權服務的車道、連接基礎設施的服務道路、連接休息區的道路等，常見於郊區或鄉村環境。

highway=motorway_link應當用於通往告訴公路的連接道路、滑行道、坡道。當高速公路終止或另一條高速公路起始處，能使用highway=motorway_link分隔、辨識不同高速公路的道路與連接路線；一般而言，兩條分歧或交會的highway=motorway道路，在開放街圖中不應直接相連，而應使用highway=motorway_link道路分隔。

高速公路一般以兩條連續的平行道路呈現，每個單向行車道以highway=motorway標記，並應以 oneway=yes標記單一通行方向。在少數案例中，雙向車流使用單一行車道雙向通行，以 oneway=no標記。

當繪製平行路徑時，將雙向節點緊鄰放置，在大部分的地圖中能獲得更好的顯示效果。以下為可選用的標籤：
