This tag indicates that cycling (riding a bicycle) is not allowed and that pushing a bicycle[1] is allowed, according to signage or local law. It is unambiguous and equivalent to bicycle=no + bicycle:pushing=yes,[2] while bicycle=no alone does not indicate whether pushing a bicycle is allowed or prohibited.
When combined with barrier=cycle_barrier, this tag is commonly used to indicate that cycling through the barrier is not physically possible, but pushing the bicycle through or around the barrier is physically possible and permitted.
Advisory or recommended dismounting
As of 2025, no consensus has emerged on whether advisory dismount signs should use this tag or a different value. Some mappers currently use this tag for situations where dismounting and pushing is merely recommended by signage but not legally required (e.g., advisory signs in the UK). This might be more clearly distinguished with additional tags.
Application support
As of 2025, this tag is supported by iD but not by JOSM. OSRM includes ways tagged with bicycle=dismount in bicycle routing and indicates that pushing is required in calculated routes. Some versions of OSRM also recommend pushing a bicycle against the flow of traffic along a one-way street.
