This tag indicates which set of implicit traffic rules apply to a particular road (rules not set explicitly by signs). Each value of this tag is associated with a different set of default traffic rules.

Because default traffic rules vary from country to country, values are country-specific (or region-specific if traffic regulations vary within the country). The traffic regulations of most countries distinguish at least two zones: urban (inside the built-up area / city limits) and rural (outside the built-up area / city limits).

All values follow the format <ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code or ISO 3166-2 region code>:<rural or urban or something else>.

This tag is based on the trafficzone proposal, which is still in draft status but widely accepted in Germany.

Values

Belgium

Since the Sixth Belgian State Reform, the regional governments can and do set separate default speed limits, but only on non-motorways.

Situation zone:traffic=* Default maxspeed=*
Motorway (autosnelweg, autoroute), outside the built-up area[BE 1] BE:motorway 120 km/h
Non-motorway, in the Flemish Region, outside the built-up area (buiten de bebouwde kom) BE-VLG:rural usually 70 km/h
Non-motorway, in the Flemish Region, inside the built-up area (binnen de bebouwde kom) BE-VLG:urban usually 50 km/h
Non-motorway, in the Walloon Region, outside the built-up area (sise hors agglomération) BE-WAL:rural usually 90 km/h
Non-motorway, in the Walloon Region, inside the built-up area (dans une agglomération) BE-WAL:urban usually 50 km/h
Non-motorway, in the Brussels-Capital Region, outside the built-up area BE-BRU:rural usually 70 km/h
Non-motorway, in the Brussels-Capital Region, inside the built-up area BE-BRU:urban usually 30 km/h
  1. Belgian motorways cannot be inside the built-up area. See the wiki page for zone:traffic=BE:motorway for more information.

Germany

Situation zone:traffic=* Default maxspeed=*
Motorway (Autobahn)[DE 1] DE:motorway[DE 2] none
Non-motorway, outside the built-up area (außerhalb geschlossener Ortschaften) DE:rural usually 100 km/h
Non-motorway, inside the built-up area (innerhalb geschlossener Ortschaften) DE:urban usually 50 km/h
  1. German motorways can be either outside or inside the built-up area. The traffic rules are the same in both cases. See the wiki page for zone:traffic=DE:motorway for more information.
  2. zone:traffic=DE:motorway is implicit for every highway=motorway in Germany.

Various other values are also currently in use in Germany, which partially overlap with the zones defined above. This should be resolved such that every road is in a unique zone. Note that other traffic rules can be mapped with separate tags.

Netherlands

Each Caribbean island has separate traffic rules.
