Problem Statement
A meat processor is a business where a hunter or animal owner can take a carcass to be processed into meat or other products. The processing is done on a small scale, usually 1-2 animals at a time.
Examples of animals these businesses commonly process:
- Deer
- Bear
- Moose
- Pig
- Kangaroo
- Turkey
Why other tags are not appropriate
This is different than a shop=butcher, since the business does not sell cuts of meat
This is different than an industrial=slaughterhouse or man_made=works because animals are not killed on-site, and only a single animal or a small quantity of animals are brought at one time.
Proposal
I propose to add the tag craft=meat_processing to represent this business. Additionally, I propose that the definition for the key animal=* be expanded to define the type of animal(s) processed at the facility.
Rationale
There are an abundance of these facilities across the United States, especially in places with an abundance of big game hunting opportunities The purpose of the business is always consistent, well defined, and well understood at each location.
Why this tag belongs in the craft=* key
Meat processing is a specialty task, performed on a small, as needed basis, often involving only one or a few animals. Meat is generally not sold outside of the services rendered on the provided animal.

Impact on Data Consumers
This should have no impact on data consumers, as it does not remove or change any tagging.
This tag may have to be added as a tagging preset and rendered.

I approve this proposal. In my local area, this would simply be called craft=butcher, because that is where hunters go to get their game bodies turned into steaks, sausages, and so on, for their private use mostly, not to be sold in the shop, meat processor sounds very much industrial, but if the native speakers are fine, so am I. --Hungerburg (talk) 22:54, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
