Proposal
Make tagging of heliports as aeroway=heliport, not with a more general scheme aeroway=aerodrome. Full definition:
"Heliport is a special kind of aerodrome, built for helicopters. It is different from aeroway=aerodrome because it is meant only for helicopters (no planes) and also from aeroway=helipad, because it contains more than just landing aids (typically it can have at least one helipad and some other parts, like terminal or apron).
Rationale
Heliports are well-known kind of aerodromes, even having it in the name, which makes it even easier for mappers to distinguish them from plane or mixed airports.
We also have a lot of them already in the database probably: TagInfo gives about 6k+ uses of such value, which is quite large amount comparing to 44k+ aerodromes (even if not all of those objects are heliports indeed).
Tagging them different from general aerodromes makes it easier to keep the rendering tidy (see the issue Too many tiny private airports on the map at small scales on osm-carto).
We could also use aeroway=aerodrome + aerodrome=heliport scheme, but that would make the wide variety of aerodrome=* values even wider, which would mix a lot of things (see the discussion in aerodrome proposal).
Examples
Tagging
aeroway=heliport + all appropriate tags from aeroway=aerodrome.
Applies to
Nodes, areas (the same as aeroway=aerodrome).
Rendering
The same as aeroway=aerodrome, just with the helicopter icon instead of a plane.

- I oppose this proposal. A heliport is basically a subtype of an aerodrome, and thus I see no good reason why aeroway=aerodrome + aerodrome=heliport can not be used instead. Reviewing all discussions, the "makes more sense to me" rationale is not globally acceptable, and the example where aeroway=private is sometimes used can be resolved by aeroway=aerodrome + access=private. --Kelerei (talk) 13:17, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
- I approve this proposal. No reason we shouldn't differentiate rotorcraft takeoff/landing facilities from fixed wing, for the same reason we differentiate runways from taxiways. Different use case scenarios. --Paul Johnson (talk) 13:28, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

- I approve this proposal. Heliports and Airports are very different, and usually serve very different purposes and customers. Having different iconography also helps with visually orienting yourself on the map - if you ive in an area with heliports (but not airports) it can be confusing to have an airplane icon (and usually just the icon is visible in -carto) when it is a heliport. --Javbw (talk) 05:28, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- I approve this proposal. --Dieterdreist I must admit that I'm a bit reluctant, because the term aerodrome according to ICAO is "A defined area on land or water (including any buildings, installations, and equipment) intended to be used either wholly or in part for the arrival, departure, and surface movement of aircraft." and helicopters clearly are aircraft. On the other hand, in OSM we use the term "aerodrome" in a much narrower sense, at least recently. Looking at the history of the tag definition, first (2009) someone added a hint, that an US English synonym for aerodrome would be airport (likely not true), later (2013) someone added a link to wikipedia (hence referring to a more inclusive definition), but the current version doesn't have these internal contradictions and clearly states that the tag should be used for airports only. Like often, there is no real definition, just some text how to apply extra tags but not the actual meaning of the tag besides the word "aerodrome (UK)". (talk) 08:17, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

- I approve this proposal. A heliport is distinctly different from an aerodrome (airport). Warin61 (talk) 00:33, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
