Swimming_pool
Proposal status: Approved (active)
Tagging: leisure=swimming_pool

Rendered as: *

Proposed value

Intent: To mark the location of man-made public swimming pools or swimming pool spa for leisure and sport purposes. A fee may be charged for entry. These are usually purpose-built pools inside a building or in the open air; though in Australia they are often built into rocky seashore areas or beaches areas or are shark netting enclosing part of a bay.

Tagging:

The new value may be used with the leisure tag with nodes. The proposed tag is:

leisure=swimming_pool

Proposed Rendering

  • A swimming-related icon in a style at the discretion of the rendering engine or just the name of the swimming pool in text from an associated name=* tag. A cartoon of swimmer in water, white on blue background, is suggested.

Proposed by: I did not propose this but have added this wiki entry, I hope it meets with the intent and approval of the original proposer. MikeCollinson 00:16, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I look forward to this proposal being accepted as I'm already frequently using it! MikeCollinson 00:16, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I can't see the a difference between leisure=swimming_pool and the sport=swimming. I would prefer tags for different type of pools.
sport=swimming_pool (pools outside)
sport=swimming_hall (pools inside a hall)
sport=swimming_natural (swimming places outside a pool, maybe in combination with nature=beach)(Raphael 08:18, 8 May 2007 (GMT+2)

I'd like to see this extended to cover areas. I also think it would be useful to cover Raphael's use cases of swimming pool/hall/natural. Not sure about the term "hall" though. --Hawke

I think swimming pool specifically refers to something man made. A swimming area is something natural. Instead of "hall" the word natatorium should probably be used as that is the proper name for an indoor swimming area. --Sadam

Ooh, I like that. Perhaps someone should propose building=natatorium.
For the record: I hate it. Polyglot 08:59, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

What does 'public' mean and is it useful to restrict it so? Few swimming pools are free. Presumably one would not tag a swimming pool in someone's garden (although why not?), but would one tag a pool that was part of, say, a David Lloyd facility. It's not any less a swimming pool, if there are other sports facilities, such as squash and basketball courts, gyms and saunas, accessed via the same entrance. Lorp 19:57, 28 June 2007 (BST)

I don't think it's useful to restrict this to public pools; I believe 'public' in this context means that anyone is allowed to use it, though there may be a usage fee involved (rather than a membership fee); local to me there is a municipal pool (owned and operated by the city) that I would consider to fit that definition. Hawke
  • access=* can be added to make it clear if it's not public, so it shouldn't be restricted I agree.
  • This is not a duplicate of sport=swimming, that is an activity, a swimming pool is a place. Swimming can also take place in rivers, lakes and seas. MikeCollinson 14:16, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't this be an amenity instead of leisure? Most importantly, this is how it is described in advertising literature for hotels, resorts, apartment/condo complexes, etc. Also, one could argue that pools are widely used for fitness, instead of just leisure. I understand there is a long-term debate over amenity vs. leisure vs. whatever, but in this case, I think amenity fits best (and I've used it extensively). I additionally propose amenity=whirlpool to tag spas/jacuzzi 21:26, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
  • I tend to think it should be leisure=pool for the general case, because not all pools are swimming pools. Other optional tags can add details like whether it's a swimming pool, wading pool, diving pool, or whirlpool, whether it has lanes (if it's a swimming pool) and how many, it's size, etc. I agree with the earlier comment that access=* would designate whether the pool is public (municipal pool), members/residents only (fitness club or apartment pool), or private (but why bother mapping backyard pools?). As for whether this would duplicate sport=swimming... absolutely not. "leisure=pool, sport=swimming" is no more redundant than "leisure=pitch, sport=soccer". The first designates a location, the second designates possible activities at that location. A wading pool or whirlpool is not sport=swimming, but is still leisure=pool. And finally, on leisure vs. amenity: I agree that amenity=pool makes a lot more sense. But I'd say the same about most of the leisure=* values, so that may not be a battle worth fighting. --Diggernet 02:19, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Backyard pools may not be a priority for most people, but they offer a way to learn answers about the land around us, "what lies over in that empty void on the map?" It can be used in considering where to buy or rent or where to locate a commercial facility or service. It can help in generating more realistic 3d worlds. Jose X 07:44, 23 April 2012 (BST)
I'd add that private swimming pools play a role in aerial firefighting, as helicopters do take water from there. --Guillembb (talk) 16:22, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
  • I don't like it. I don't feel it makes the distinction clear between the following two cases: The pool as a physical object. And as an area/building/place that contains facilities (one or more pools, dressing rooms, toilets, etc) open to the the public. To prevent people from using the same tag for tagging pools in somebodies back yard and tagging places where the public may go for a swim, I would like to propose the following two tags instead: "landuse=swimming_pool" for the first case, and "leisure=swimming" for the second. Pools in peoples back yard would use "landuse=swimming_pool". Open air areas open to the public should be tagged "leisure=swimming", with each pool tagged separately. And swimming halls would only use "leisure=swimming", with no use of "landuse=swimming_pool" (unless we start mapping the inside of buildings). --Roemcke 04:34, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
  • why do not use "private-pool" ?

  • I disapprove this proposal (change of vote, this proposal is too vague and ill-defined, and a duplicate of sport=swimming). Myfanwy 00:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
  • I approve this proposal. ramack 05:52, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
  • I disapprove this proposal in it's current form. I also think we need some sort of swimming_pool tag, but this proposal looks pretty unfinished. It's unclear how this is related to the existing sport=swimming, the comments are not resolved (e.g. how to distinguish between indoor and outdoor). -- Ulfl 08:50, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
  • I disapprove this proposal in its current form. Swimming is a sport, so IMHO we should upgrade the sport=swimming tag with sub-tags like indoor/outdoor,access ...--PhilippeP 09:55, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
  • I 'disapprove this proposal for now. I agree things are unanswered and voting should not start yet. - LastGrape 23:42, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

  • I approve this proposal Gianfra 1 june 2010 swiming pools are not only to swim they are also for leisure time especially when they are open space and with private access.

10 for approval and 4 for disapproval before my vote and the result is opposed.. this is democracy!Gianfra

  • I approve this proposal. Trimoto 1 june 2010
  • I disapprove this proposal ahmster 6 july 2010 because I think "private-pool" is better
  • I approve this proposal. --Ptigrouick 00:58, 3 August 2010 (BST) swimming_pool is enough whereas "private_pool" is not useful because of existing tag "access=private"
  • I approve this proposal. Pauluzz 19:38, 5 August 2010 (BST) because i think a swimming pool is a physical thing used for leisure. The non-physical sport=swimming can be in a natural water or in a swimming pool.
  • I approve this proposal --Yod4z 23:42, 23 September 2010 (BST) but we need something on undertag for semi-covered private pool that can be use in winter covered and in summer without cover (covered=yes). Some pool are totally natural (without use of chemical products) natural=yes. I if the swimming pool is heat.
  • I approve this proposal ----Kaitu 14:53, 1 December 2010 (UTC) leisure fits better than amenity. Should be extended on areas. Use access key for access restrictions. Should only be used on man made structures, other types of areas suitable for swimming should just be marked with an additional sport=swimming.

All Potlatch2 shortcuts create amenity|swimming_pool

Issue: Potlatch2's simple mode includes shortcuts for "swimming_pool" under both "Amenity" and "Sports&Leisure".

Problem: both shortcuts create amenity=swimming_pool. Neither creates leisure=swimming_pool. Despite these amenity shortcuts, leisure is catching up to amenity and leisure is now almost as popular as amenity in the database.

Solution?: Until the debate between amenity vs. leisure is resolved: could someone please add shortcuts in Potlatch2 for leisure=swimming_pool under both "Amenity" and "Sports&Leisure"? Thanks Peace2 16:18, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
