Updating images

Hi,

regarding your change https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=File:Rendering-tourism_zoo.png&oldid=1797569, you can upload a new version of a file instead of uploading a new one. When uploading a new version, all pages using the file will be updated as well and you can always retrieve the old version from the wiki system for comparison. --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 21:26, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Was meinst Du? --MK
--Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 10:46, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
--Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 21:02, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
Danke.

Data item translations

Hi, thanks for adding descriptions to the data items! Please do not add labels, especially when they are the same as in English. The system will automatically use the English ones. In reality, we don't have any good usage for them just yet. See more at Data items page. Thanks! --Yurik (talk) 19:20, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

groups

Hi, I appreciate much the removing of translations of data item labels on keys and tags! --Chris2map (talk) 23:03, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Welcome. --MalgiK (talk) 15:58, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

But how is this with items of groups? --Chris2map (talk) 23:03, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

I don't know. Do you have an example edit/change available by chance, so that i can better understand the case? Did i accidentally remove translations from a group item? --MalgiK (talk) 15:58, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi, my question was produced from Item:Q4678. --Chris2map (talk) 19:22, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, now i understand what you mean. I reverted the example & i will ckeck for others. --MalgiK (talk) 14:32, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

There is a relationship between groups and categories. And we do (or at least I do) translate categories (e.g. DE:Boundaries -> DE:Grenzen). IMHO it makes sense to translate the labels of data items of groups to match the naming of the equivalent category in the respective language.

--Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 12:55, 5 July 2019 (UTC)

Link zur Anleitung --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 17:45, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
--Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 09:25, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

LangSwitch Error

Marking wiki edits as "minor"

Malgik, I notice that you have often marked your edits to the text of wiki articles as "minor" even when you have changed the description or definition of one of the items on a page. That should be considered a normal edit. Please only click the "This is a minor edit" option if it is a minor typographical error (typo) fix or somethings similar. If you have changed the content of the article, it is not a minor edit, in my understanding. (Minor edits do not send notifications to people who have recently edited the page). --Jeisenbe (talk) 14:09, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Jeisenbe, thanks for this information. Honestly I did never care for this setting. I thought this is an automatic "cs"-classification of the wikimedia software (similar to the "N" letter for new article pages). Now it seems the checkbox "This is a minor edit" was always checked. I will watch for this setting starting from now. Also thank you for telling me, that this has an impact for further notification messages. --MalgiK (talk) 14:32, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
In case the wiki system marks all your edits as minor by default, please refer to the setting at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing. There is a corresponding check box, third check box from the top. --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 19:01, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Tigerfell, i just unchecked "Mark all edits minor by default" & it seems working. --MalgiK (talk) 19:37, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

deletion?

Hi, did you delete queries on purpose? [4]. thx --Yurik (talk) 14:38, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for notice - No, was a misclick is repaired. --MalgiK (talk) 14:43, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for a quick fix! --Yurik (talk) 15:02, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Sophox examples

I think it's a bad idea to add any overpass turbo examples to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/SPARQL_examples - sophox.org automatically pulls in the examples on that page, and by adding overpass turbo examples in a table structure. you're breaking the "Examples" button on sophox.org. Can you revert all those changes? Mmd (talk) 10:06, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for checking & sorry, didn't know that i did break anything by adding overpass turbo equivalent examples to this page. What in detail is responsible for the breaking?
- adding the overpass short links like (e.g. https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/WOW)
- adding the Overpass-turbo template e.g. OverpassTurboExample
- moving the SPARQL template SPARQL into a wiki table format
Would there be any other way to leave the overpass-turbo information on this page, without breaking anything? --MalgiK (talk) 10:50, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure there is some other way and I believe it isn't the purpose of the SPARQL page to have a comparison with overpass turbo. Maybe it would be better to create a page on its own and link to the SPARQL examples only. The notice at the top "(The Examples panel at https://sophox.org/ automatically loads the contents of this page. Please maintain the structure of this page so that the panel continues to display all the examples correctly.") suggests, that edits should keep the original format. Right now, all the examples you moved to a table and added an overpass turbo example, have disappeared from sophox.org. If you need more details how the parser for this Wiki page works in detail, you need to talk to @Yurik who is maintaining the sophox.org service. Mmd (talk) 11:05, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
@Mmd: Just moved to wiki-table to a separate page: SPARQL_vs_Overpass_QL_examples and removed the wiki-table at SPARQL_examples, so the pulling of examples on https://sophox.org/ should work again. --MalgiK (talk) 11:23, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

DE:Verkehrszeichen in Deutschland - Test Teil1, Test Teil2

Jetzt haben wir das Zeugs doppelt... Wozu?

--EinKonstanzer (talk) 18:17, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

--MalgiK (talk) 16:45, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Your recent question about AI on the 2020 OSMF Board election

Hi! You added a question for the OSMF Board candidates: "If the use of AI systems causes damages on existing OSM geographical data (e.g. in Philippines) do you see any needed activity from OSMF side?"[5]. I am from the Philippines and I would like to know if you were asking in hypothetical terms ("What if AI edits damages OSM data in, say, the Philippines?") or if you actually know that OSM data in the Philippines was indeed damaged by AI edits? If it's the latter case, may I know the details because this is news to me. —seav (talk) 16:38, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello @Seav:, thanks a lot for your interest and double checking my questions. I did this first time (add questions there) and please apologies i mixed AI-activities in Philippines and Thailand. So i will correct this there (on the page Foundation/AGM20/Election to Board/questions). --MalgiK (talk) 10:24, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

onlyinclude vs noinclude

What is the point of changes such as https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Map_Features:historic&diff=2070423&oldid=2060903 ? Is there any benefit to that? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:30, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

I did same edits for templates (especially which contains taglists) which are listed on page map features. The main purpose was to homogenize these pages by adding the footer "This table is a wiki template with a default description in English. Editable here." and Categories where it was missing. The other change was to homogenize the "onlyinclude" / "noinclude". So for the latter it was just to bring all these pages to the same format, if you prefer "onlyinclude" over "noinclude", please feel free to change all pages to this variant. Hope i did not destroy any other involved logic. --MalgiK (talk) 21:43, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

trailblazed=*

Hello, you recently updated trailblazed=* page and while you have improved many things I have done (and I am grateful for that) you also reverted couple of things and I don't understand why. I am tried build page according result of approval process and address all issue which showed up during the process. There was approved that trailblazed tag should be used only on "ways" and never on "relations" but you reverted onRelation=no back to onRelation= ... What is reason for that? I also changed a picture which clearly describing common trail marking on the "relations" which shouldn't be mistaken with trailblazed tag ... this was very often mentioned during approval process on discussion page and during voting, you reverted that change too. Shouldn't we change that picture? Please let me know. --Miramikes (talk) 19:54, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for message, that was an edit accident (maybe i did edit an older pages version), fixed it see here. Please doubble check if it is okay now. --MalgiK (talk) 05:41, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
There is missing couple of minor edits, but I will fix them by myself. Thank you for help! --Miramikes (talk) 07:09, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Kirchtürme

Hallo. Was meinst du? Vollis (talk) 17:16, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

data items

Hi MalgiK, please follow the guidelines and don't remove periods from descriptions.

Hi Maro21, thanks for pointing to follow the guidelines (never read this), do you know if all these restrictions (which were most likely coming through this edit) were discussed with a wide OSM-community before? Could you provide correspondent links to any talk? For my changes i had in mind some of these background information: wikidata Adding_descriptions and wikidata More_on_descriptions. --MalgiK (talk) 08:09, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
We're not Wikidata, so their rules don't apply here. I can see that they use different descriptions - they don't begin with capital letters. I don't know, this edit is from 2018, I started my journey here in 2020, you should ask the author. Anyway, all the descriptions in Polish ends with a period, most of the English ones too. maro21 17:36, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Furthermore, Key template is a redirect to Tag template. One can use both of them and they have the same effect. maro21 21:20, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

I know the redirect, i think Key is easier to read in the wiki source code if there are links to keys. --MalgiK (talk) 08:09, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

please stop changing template:tag to template:Key

template:Key is just a redirect to template:tag ( https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Key&redirect=no ), edits mass changing Tag to Key just pollute watchlists and are not useful in any way Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:22, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Changing the capitalization of templates like in special:diff/2342190 also does not strike me as useful. --Push-f (talk) 16:59, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Beschreibung

--geozeisig (talk) 06:41, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

Hallo danke fürs Drüberschauen. Gut beobachtet. Hoffe damit wird der Hintergrund verständlich, denn z.B. beim Beispiel Wasserturm lautet die EN-Beschreibung: Structure with a water tank at an altitude to increase pressure in water network also ohne die explizite Benennung von water tower, oder würdest Du dann etwa die EN-Variante zu A water tower, is a structure with a water tank at an altitude to increase pressure in water network ändern wollen? --MalgiK (talk) 17:14, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

Advertising

The advertising proposal is not abandoned, it is the basis for the advertising tags that are actively used. It became active without voting, through usage. An abandoned proposal is a proposal that is not integrated, this one is. —Dieterdreist (talk) 07:22, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

De facto tag may have proposal which is abandoned. See for example Proposed features/opening hours:signed=no Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:52, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
I don’t question that there may be a defacto tag and abandoned proposals for the same tag, but here it is not like this, the proposal is the same as the established tags, it is not abandoned, it is integrated in our system. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 08:56, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
If tag ended adopted via regular mapping and proposal was never voted on - then the proposal is still abandoned (I did exactly this with some of my own proposals) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:59, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for double checking. What i still think is true that a 'defacto'-status for an proposal isn't useful and logical. On proposal status overview list I collected some known status items. For 'abandoned' there is a description the proposal has a long time of inactivity (at least 3 months) on the wiki pages (including all languages and discussion pages) and is also not added to the OSM database and yes this is maybe not perfect matching and 'defacto'-tag as we have here for advertising=*, because is also not added to the OSM database is actually wrong. In the meantime Mateuz changed the status of the advertising-proposal to 'inactive' what i think it is really better suitable. --MalgiK (talk) 16:33, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
my preference would be for a status that expresses the proposal is finished because the tag is already used and documented as proposed. A conclusion without voting but different from an inactive proposal which may continue any time, and different from a proposal that is unrelated to the current tag. —Dieterdreist (talk) 00:07, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Good explanation, now think i understand what you mean & prefer. But I also think the current list of status items can't exactly represent this. (Maybe the current available status "Unspecified" or even new items like 'accepted' or 'acknowledged' would suit.) For the other task (proposal is finished) I would add as common a banner and run the archived procedure, see:
=> for the banner I found a similar template to the approved (Approved feature link) a banner for proposals without voting (No vote feature link) I did minor colour modification today (from yellow to light green)
=> for the later archiving step there is the corresponding template available: Archived proposal
You can compare such a similar case with the Proposed_features/Traffic_sign proposal (which has status "Unspecified" has a No vote feature link banner and is archived by Archived proposal) or even with the address proposal (Proposed_features/House_numbers/Karlsruhe_Schema) --MalgiK (talk) 18:06, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Great, the template on the traffic sign proposal does exactly express what I meant. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 23:16, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Okay - added it... --MalgiK (talk) 14:29, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
Danke. --Dieterdreist (talk) 21:40, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

Integration of Talk:OSM_Smart_Menu content into OSM_Smart_Menu

While I would have no problem as such, I see several issues here:

 • your version of the table is missing the coverage (`admin_level` + `name`? or OSM id)
 • you didn't notify your change in the talk page, so that we have now 2 sources instead of one, each having an history
 • the idea was to have a parsable file to enable direct usage by the extension.

--Nospam2005 (talk) 18:29, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your message, it seems I don't understand in detail the issues. But please feel free to add / remove / merge the corresponding data. I would be happy if there would be a solution to import an entire list, is this what you want to develop by talking "a parsable file"? --MalgiK (talk) 18:38, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
That's fully normal, you didn't see the comments on Github tickets I guess ;-) and I used the page in comments where people asked for an addition. The purpose of the separate entry (the talk page) was exactly that: have a simple file that the tool could import. I see that a new ticket exists on the subject: Adding an export/import function for customized link collection data #185. Maybe we can create a template to make the extension easier. --Nospam2005 (talk) 19:23, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

License

Note that https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Osmand_information_guidepost.svg and some other are missing license info, see Wiki:Media file license chart Maybe it qualifies for PD-shape but I am not sure enough to mark it Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 19:02, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing to the Wiki:Media file license chart page, watched it today first time. Regarding Osmand information guidepost.svg i'm completely not sure which one of the many available licence types will match this. I just thought OsmAnd is an open source project and it should be no licence violation to use pictures / icons for the OSM-wiki. I'm would fine with PD-shape but as said i'm a license type tagging novice.--MalgiK (talk) 21:09, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
In general such files often require attribution, or stating their license. For example https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Osmand.jpg has some noticeable limitations for potential reusers Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:48, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

I fixed as far as I could and asked for more info to finish it.

Thanks for asking and updating! --MalgiK (talk) 23:09, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

In meantime - are you author of https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Power_pole_line_attachment_example.png file? Is it your own photo or found somewhere else? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:54, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Done --MalgiK (talk) 23:09, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
If it is from Mapillary then you need to attribute specific person who made the photo (I suspect that this license is used to make file reuse harder). this requires tracking down where this photo was taken (or replacing it by something similar depicting what is needed) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 15:37, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I can no longer find the route in question (and thus the author). If the author really needs to be clearly named, please delete the image - by the way, it's not really important to have it in the OSM-wiki. --MalgiK (talk) 21:46, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Missing file information

Hello! And thanks for your upload - but some extra info is necessary.

Sorry for bothering you about this, but it is important to know source of the uploaded files.

Are you the creator of image File:Taginfo2 3.png ?

Or is it copied from some other place (which one?)?

Please, add this info to the file page - something like "I took this photo" or "downloaded from -website link-" or "I took this screeshot of program XYZ" or "this is map generated from OpenStreetMap data and SRTM data" or "map generated from OSM data and only OSM data" or "This is my work based on file -link-to-page-with-that-file-and-its-licensing-info-" or "used file downloaded from internet to create it, no idea which one".

Doing this would be already very useful.

Licensing - photos

In case that you are the author of the image: Would you agree to open licensing of this image, allowing its use by anyone (similarly to your OSM edits)?

In case where it is a photo you have taken then you can make it available under a specific free license (except some cases, like photos of modern sculptures in coutries without freedom of panorama or taking photo of copyrighted artwork).

Would you be OK with CC0 (it allows use without attribution or any other requirement)?

Or do you prefer to require attribution and some other things using CC-BY-SA-4.0?

If you are the author: Please add CC0-self to the file page to publish the image under CC0 license.

You can also use to publish under CC-BY-SA-4.0 license.

Once you add missing data - please remove from the file page.

Licensing - other images

If it is not a photo situation gets a bit more complicated.

See Drafts/Media file license chart that may help.

note: if you took screenshot of program made by someone else, screenshot of OSM editor with aerial imagery: then licensing of that elements also matter and you are not a sole author.

note: If you downloaded image made by someone else then you are NOT the author.

Note that in cases where photo is a screenshot of some software interface: usually it is needed to handle also copyright of software itself.

Note that in cases where aerial imagery is present: also licensing of an aerial imagery matter.

Help

Feel free to ask for help if you need it - you can do it for example by asking on Talk:Wiki: new topic.

Please ask there if you are not sure what is the proper next step. Especially when you are uploading files that are not your own work or are derivative work (screenshots, composition of images, using aerial imagery etc).

If you are interested in wider discussion about handling licencing at OSM Wiki, see this thread.

(sorry if I missed something that already states license and source: I am looking through over 20 000 files and fixing obvious cases on my own, in other I ask people who upladed files, but it is possible that I missed something - in such case also please answer)

--Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 19:10, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

Added some source information, see here. --MalgiK (talk) 22:00, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

License

What is the license of https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Maps.me-icon.png ? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 20:45, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

The source is, as stated at [6] the following link: https://github.com/mapsme/omim/blob/master/android/res/drawable-hdpi/about_logo.png. On the Omim main github page at last title there is a license note: This source code is Copyright (C) 2020 My.com B.V. (Mail.Ru Group), published under Apache Public License 2.0, except third-party libraries. See NOTICE and data/copyright.html files for more information. Do you know, is this something which could be used for the maps.me icon licensing?--MalgiK (talk) 23:44, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
So icon itself is fully copyrighted and not covered by this licensing statement Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 20:13, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
So i added the delete template, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=File:Maps.me-icon.png&diff=2413737&oldid=2398638 --MalgiK (talk) 07:27, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Überholte Verkehrszeichen DE:... - Abbildung für Achtung

Hallo!

 1. File:Ambox outdated delete.svg Ambox outdated delete.svg
 2. File:Hourglass icon (orange).svg Hourglass icon (orange).svg
 3. File:Ambox outdated serious.svg Ambox outdated serious.svg
 4. File:Ambox important red.svg Ambox important red.svg
 5. File:Ambox clock red.svg Ambox clock red.svg

Was hälst Du davon? Gruß, Chris - Chris2map (talk) 14:15, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Hallo.
Hppynwyear! Update

Hi Malgik. The Sool part of Somalia needs to be updated because its coltrolled by Khatumo, and on 19th Oct, Sool Sanaag Cayn provinces were recognized as part of Khatumo per this declaration. Rreooityt2 (talk) 23:20, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Rreooityt2, my user page is the wrong place for such questions. You already posted the same under Talk:Somalia which is actually the better place. If you want to have more attention to your request you might open an additional thread in the OpenStreetMap Community Forum (community.openstreetmap.org). --MalgiK (talk) 23:35, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

template capitalisation changes

moving between {{Tag| and {{tag| is not really useful - what is the point of edits like https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Key:landuse&curid=10527&diff=2606546&oldid=2424329 ? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 16:24, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

This was a by-catch of fixing Template:Map_Features:landuse. I didn't saw from the beginning of the edit, that the part to fix was mainly only related to the Template:Map_Features:landuse page and started editing on main landuse page. Btw, as you see there are not only changes regarding capitalisation of template strings, there are also changes like amenity to amenity (tag to key) included. I know neither is explicitly required (it works with uppercase and lowercase letters, it works with "key" or "tag" because there is a redirect behind it), but it increases readability for me.--MalgiK (talk) 17:17, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
Well, someone else can claim that amenity is more readable and start changing back again. This-recapitalization changes are not helpful at all, the same goes for changing amenity to amenity -this only generates noise (and I for example prefer amenity over amenity) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:49, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
So far i see there are many templates available, as an example just one group of it, see: Category:Templates_using_TemplateData. If you look there you can see each template is capitalized there and starts with a capital letter, further there are few templates-names which combines 2 words, e.g. "TagKey", "KeyDescription". So we have capital letter anyway also inside of template strings. Why doesn't let use these words in the wiki article pages source text exaclty the same way how they are writtwn in these lists (Category:Templates_using_TemplateData)? Why do you prefer the lower case style? How would you write KeyDescription / TagKey? --MalgiK (talk) 13:14, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
