Status: de facto

amenity=restaurant is applied to generally formal eating places with sit-down facilities selling full meals served by waiters and often licensed (where allowed) to sell alcoholic drinks.

How to Map

Set a node or draw as an area along the restaurant outline. Tag it with amenity=restaurant and name=*.

One can also add the type of food served with cuisine=*.

stars=* can be used to describe the classification of the restaurant, some deemed it too generic and proposed to use award=*, but the proposal was rejected.

Tags to use in combination

Recommended:

  • cuisine=* – type of cuisine or food
  • delivery=yes/no – whether the place offers delivery
  • name=* – name
  • opening_hours=* – opening hours
  • takeaway=yes/no/only – whether the place offers takeaway

Optional:

If applicable:

  • bar=yes – the presence of a bar with alcoholic beverages
  • brand=* – brand
  • level=* – floor number, if the fast food is located in a multi-story building, such as a shopping mall
  • microbrewery=yes – a microbrewery is located in the restaurant
  • phone=* – phone number
  • stars=* – restaurant with Michelin star
  • website=* – website

Rare combinations:

  • changing_table=yes/no/limited – availability of an infant changing table
  • dog=* – whether dogs are allowed
  • drive_through=yes – if a drive-through service is available. Consider amenity=fast_food instead.
  • kids area=* – whether there is an area where kids can play in a children's corner

If the restaurant and a hotel is the same add another point and the corresponding properties. (See One feature, one OSM element)
