R-Roads

I've added the R-Roads beginning with R5xxx on to the template. Not to depress anyone, but there are 671 R-Roads -- is that a bit much to put on the project page -- do we need a sub page for R-Roads? Tbibby 20:53, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Road tagging

As far as I can see, all national roads added so far are represented as trunk rather than primary roads. It seems to me that primary would be a better representation for our National Primary Roads, since it most closely corresponds to the UK Primary classification on which the OSM label seems to be based. National Secondary Roads would then be tagged as trunk. Opinions? --Mackerski 21:08, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

For any roads I've been tagging I have marked N roads as primary and R as secondary which would match the UK A and B classifications. --Spideog 19:03, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

I've looked some more into this. In the UK, A-roads come in two flavours, primary and the rest. Primary roads carry green signs and tend to be rendered green on maps. The others have white-backed signs and are typically mapped in red. Notwithstanding the confusing name, the OSM convention in the UK is to tag primary roads as "trunk" and non-primary A-roads as "primary". Go figure. Translating this to the Irish situation, it would suggest that National Primary roads (N1-N50, if they went that high) should be tagged "trunk" and National Secondary roads (N51 upwards) as primary, since the resulting map colour scheme is a good approximation to What You Expect (striped green isn't going to happen...). Regional Roads can be tagged "secondary", leaving tertiary available for discretionary use for well used unclassified roads. I've been cleaning up a lot of primary routes and tagging them as trunk. There is a strange thing as far as naming the N and M roads in Ireland is concerned. In the UK the A1 and the M1 are two completely different roads that happen to just have the same numbering, in Ireland though an M road is just part of an N route that has been given a motorway designation for one section and as far as the NRA is concerned it is still called the N? for it's full length. Should this be reflected in the tagging of motorway sections at all, or do we just ignore it for convenience? --Spideog 18:00, 18 April 2007 (BST)

Ignore it for convenience, I say. My reasoning is that, except for reasons of poor signposting, you never see any reference to the N-number on motorway sections of national routes. That the M1 is part of the N1 is simply a legal curiosity. Or to say it another way, anybody who cares about the distinction can readily infer the N-prefix if he wishes. I'm currently focussing on Dublin/Leinster to correctly classify those M, N and R roads that are already in place, filling in some gaps as I go if enough data is at hand. --Mackerski 00:31, 26 April 2007 (BST)

Thanks. I'm thinking more in terms of descriptions rather than maps, something like "L12345 starts at the R123 at Ballymore, passes through Kilbeg, Rathliss, and Newtown, and ends at Knocknamuck". That sort of thing would help to identify already-mapped unnumbered roads, and if the source is no more than the council's statutory instrument, it should be free to use, no? Of course, IANAL. Removing "WikiProject" prefix

Hi, I am Daniel, from Spain. I would like to change the name of the wiki pages related to the Ireland mapping project to remove the "Wikiproject" prefix following the pages name conventions.

The name of the pages related to the Ireland mapping project would be "Ireland" (name of place) instead of "Wikiproject Ireland", as recommended by the wiki conventions. It is a change that I have already made in United States, Canada, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Denmark, Norway, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, India, and all Spanish-speaking countries on this Wiki (and more).

Almost all the pages of the Ireland mapping project are already renamed. I will just remove the prefix "WikiProject" from the remaining pages.

Projects - Nov 2020 cleanup

I would like to cleanup the projects section of the Ireland page.

Current projects are:

• osmirl_buildings project: map as many of the 5.5m buildings in Ireland.

Past projects are:

• Clonmel Heritage Week 2020 project
• Townlands.ie
• others?

Other projects listed on the page:

• Places
• Infrastructure
• Irish Language (Gaeilge)
• Gaelic games
• Background Imagery
• Imports

I would suggest that each project has a clear goal, 1-2 identified leaders and an easy way for others to contribute / join the effort. Even pet projects are welcome to be listed as long as they meet the above criteria. Some of the above should probably be moved to a reference section unless there is high-priority mapping required for some of the elements.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
