Typical Central American MUTCD signs

The Central American Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (Spanish: Manual Centroamericano de Dispositivos Uniformes para el Control de Tránsito) is a standard for road signs, signals, and markings in Central America based on the American Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). It is published by the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) for the countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA), particularly Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. The latest edition was published in 2014 (as of 2025).

Usage in OpenStreetMap

A traffic sign is mapped as a node node tagged traffic_sign=SICA:Z1-2, where Z1-2 is the sign's alphanumeric designation. Unlike the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, the Central American Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices specifies a coded system of signs that is used directly by several SICA member states. However, some SICA member states such as Panama do maintain their own sign codes; consult the country-specific page for tagging details.

Sign designations

Each standard sign or plaque in the Central American MUTCD is assigned an alphanumeric designation and organized by series. A sign designation follows this format:

Category Series Sign Variant
R 11 - 1 b
Regulatory Safety Zones and Pedestrian Bridges No Pedestrian Crossing Symbol Sign

Signs by series

The following pages contain a correspondence between Central American MUTCD signs and their most likely tagging in OpenStreetMap:

Unless otherwise specified, apply the suggested tags to whatever the sign refers to, which is typically not at the precise location of the sign itself. Optionally, you can also map the sign itself as a traffic_sign=* node.
