OSM Data - protection, legal threats and vandalism: Legal threats

OpenStreetMap Foundation sometimes receives protests, demands, legal threats (or documents claiming to be legal threats) regarding disputed territories. Claiming that data in OpenStreetMap is harmful/evil/illegal.

  • Are you OK with dealing with such things?
  • Are you OK with potential limitations on travel?

Roland Olbricht - Q08 OSM Data: Legal threats

I'm OK with dealing with such things. I'm aware of an effective travel ban for India and China. As I am already a board member, I cannot change that anyway.

Guillaume Rischard - Q08 OSM Data: Legal threats

Yes! I have dealt with such cases in the past. In general, explaining the Information for officials and diplomats of countries and entities with disputed territories is enough. We also receive demands to delete objects that exist on the ground and are publically visible. I'm not aware of any cases where we have yielded to such demands.

We do delete or even sometimes redact private information.

Daniela (Dani) Waltersdorfer Jimenez - Q08 OSM Data: Legal threats

I'm not sure what is meant by potential limitations to travel, but I am okay and comfortable with dealing with disruptors to bring down fires when needed.

Włodzimierz Bartczak - Q08 OSM Data: Legal threats

In this case, adopting clear and transparent standards seems to be the only solution. And I have nothing against such restrictions.

Ivo Reano - Q08 OSM Data: Legal threats

As mappers who enter data remotely we are not always fully aware of what we see. It should be made clear, for example with automatic warnings that you are operating in "problem" territory. This currently happens through communications with local groups, and naturally knowing from the media that scenes of more or less open war are taking place in a certain territory would already be a warning to the mapper to use maximum caution.
