È utilizzata comunemente per descrivere il materiale di monumenti, memoriali, statue, muri e recinzioni ma può essere usato anche con altri oggetti fisici ad eccezioni dei seguenti che usano altre etichette:

• facciata di un edificio → building:material=*
• tetto di un edificio → roof:material=*
• superficie delle strade → surface=*
• il contenuto, ad esempio di una cisterna → content=*.
