I did some check against http://tagstat.hypercube.telascience.org/tagdetails.php?tag=man_made. Found these widely used but undescribed:

petroleum_well vs. pumping_rig

Shouldn't man_made=petroleum_well be replaced by the approved and more versatile man_made=pumping_rig? --Fkv 17:51, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Building tag

Does man_made=* imply building=yes, or should I add that? A water tower I added is only represented by a symbol (Mapnik), and the outline isn't visible. I don't want to map for the renderer, but in this case I don't think it's clear how to tag. --Erik Lundin (talk) 08:51, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Neither is it implied nor should you add it. Man_made stands on it own and is generally used for "nonbuilding structures".--Jojo4u (talk) 15:51, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

Roof

Why we do not have man_made=roof? If it is just a solid top cover man-made, object without foundation. --Władysław Komorek (talk) 05:50, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Yes, this might be a good point. But two thoughts against: Many roofs are part of a building and should be tagged building:part=roof. And after all it's only the name of a key, the meaning stays the same. Changing the tag is much too cumbersome.--Jojo4u (talk) 14:40, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Cistern

Need a tag for "cistern". In Africa there are many. It differs both from water_well and landuse=reservoir. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SergioAJV (talkcontribs) 12:45, 25 January 2015

reservoir_covered should fit --GerdHH (talk) 14:29, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Man_made=yes

I added man_made=yes instead of building=yes in the tag list. There is no reason to tag non-building structure without established tag as building=yes--Jojo4u (talk) 21:08, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks User icon 2.svgMfuji (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.) for fully replacing building with yes, I'm still getting used to the templates.--Jojo4u (talk) 07:12, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Cattle bathroom

Where can I post this propose to create a new value to man_made?: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2017-May/032304.html (and following answers) Santamariense (talk) 18:05, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

guy versus guy_wire

Mein Proposal man_made=guy_wire hat 96 Nutzungen, der akzeptierte Tag man_made=guy hat nur 19 Nutzungen. Was soll ich tun? - (talk) 12:36, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Mineshaft

The illustration of man_made=mineshaft shows a headstock (usually as headframe=yes). This may be confusing. SK53 (talk) 18:33, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Remaining poles and columns

Mention how to tag individual remaining parts of former buildings, e.g., a single w:Column#Greek_and_Roman. Jidanni (talk) 18:13, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Add man_made=spoil_heap?

Another user would like to add the tag man_made=spoil_heap to Map Features:

"The tag man_made=spoil_heap is used to map a spoil heap or Spoil tip <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Spoil_tip>, a pile or piles of waste rock removed during mining."

This tag was documented in 2015 as "in use" when it was used 600 times, and has now been used 2400 times: https://taghistory.raifer.tech/#***/man_made/spoil_heap

Usage is fairly concentrated in Scotland, Russia, central Europe, plus a couple of spots in the USA and in South America: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/?key=man_made&value=spoil_heap#map

The one issue is whether it is clearly different than landuse=landfill. See prior discussion at Talk:Tag:man_made=spoil_heap

Thoughts on whether this tag is common enough and well established enough that it should be on Map Features? --Jeisenbe (talk) 22:58, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
