An open-air ground-level area explicitly dedicated to vehicle parking. This area must be accessible through one or more entrance and/or exit ways used by all vehicles entering the parking area before distributing themselves to individual parking spaces.
If individual spaces are directly accessible from a public street (with no internal aisles), use parking=street_side instead.
How to map
Draw an
outlining the extent of the parking area and tag it with amenity=parking + parking=surface.
Using a single
is possible, though not recommended, when the outline cannot be determined. In such cases, consider mapping only a
with amenity=parking_entrance.
Map the connecting
highway=* elements (often highway=service) that provide access between the parking area and the road network, ensuring proper accessibility for users.
Within the area tagged with parking=surface:
- individual parking spaces (whether or not marked on the ground) generally do not need to be mapped one by one. When some have a specific characteristic worth mapping explicitly, use
amenity=parking_space+parking_space=*(for exampleparking_space=disabled) for those spaces. - when aisles exist to distribute traffic within the parking area, map them using
highway=service+service=parking_aisle. These ways should be drawn even if no painted markings are present. For this internal network, remember to connect it to the parking entrances/exits and thus to the road network; otherwise, the parking area will be considered inaccessible.
Common mistake
The most frequent issue is forgetting to connect the parking=surface area to the road network.
Additional useful tags
Common tags used with amenity=parking:
name=*capacity=*(+capacity:disabled=*,capacity:charging=*, etc.)access=*fee=*surface=*— This refers to the surface of the parking spaces themselves, not of the aisles (which is tagged onhighway=*+surface=*). For example,surface=paving_stonesmay be used on theamenity=parkingobject, whilesurface=asphaltis used on thehighway=serviceaisles and onamenity=parking_spaceobjects for disabled parking bays.operator=*+ ideallyoperator:wikidata=*supervised=*lit=*park_ride=*hiking=*
