导入数据只应由了解并有丰富 OpenStreetMap 社区经验的人士进行操作，并应经谨慎的计划和当地社区的协商后再行动。

导入是将外部数据上传至OSM的过程。

批量导入一般只会作为单个志愿者上传数据的补充。只要在可行的情况下，志愿者所提供的数据总是优先于导入的数据。

许多免费的潜在数据源已经在之前就上传过，比如：

• AND Data（荷兰）
• TIGER（美国）
• Canvec（加拿大），
• MassGIS（美国马萨诸塞州）。

不像普通的地图编辑，导入数据需要将已有的数据和新数据进行融合，因此非常复杂。
