What are the PoliMappers Adventures?

PoliMappers is going to publish on its social media channels (Facebook user polimappers and Twitter user@PoliMappers) a simple challenge everyday for the entire month of December 2018, with the purpose of contributing to OpenStreetMap while having fun. The idea is inspired by the traditional Advent calendar.

How to participate?

  1. Follow us on our social media channels.
  2. Read the instructions for the challenge of the day.
  3. Important: add #polimappersadventures in your changeset comment when you modify the OpenStreetMap database. (If you are a member of PoliMappers, please add also the hashtags #youthmappers #polimappers.)

A new year of adventures also means learning something new about OSM on Learn OSM. If you want to map using what you learned today, add #polimappersadventures to the comment of your changesets!

What happens if you would like to map and you don't have your computer? You use your smartphone! Download and learn how to use MapSwipe! With one tap you can map!

December 3

It's Monday, so it is time to start mapping! Find a street lamp and map it using the tag: highway=street_lamp.

Map a tree row with the tag: natural=tree_row.

Give humanitarian help! Log in with your OpenStreetMap account and contribute to a HOT task!

Fix and close an issue/note. You can find them by activating the notes layer at zoom level 9 or higher on the OSM map.

Are you getting crazy buying presents? Remember to tag the shop where you go using the tag: shop=*!

There are different types of recycling bins, find for batteries and drugs and map them with the tag: amenity=recycling plus the tag: recycling:batteries=yes or tag: recycling:drugs=yes.

Giving humanitarian help is possible also with TeachOSM. Log in with your OpenStreetMap account and contribute to our PoliMappers TeachOSM project!

Map with JOSM. In case of need, consult the HOT webinar basic level and advanced level!

Create a GPS track using the OsmAnd application and then upload it on OSM traces.

Map the opening hours using the tag: opening_hours=*. This can be complex but this tool can help you!

Take photos with Mapillary or OpenStreetCam! Download them on your smartphone and use them with iD editor to map features on OpenStreetMap!

Another way to use images for mapping is Pic4Review, choose one mission and start mapping!

Also some local chapters have their tasking manager! Log in with your OSM account to the Italian OSM Tasking Manager and map the Italian roads! More information can be found at guide.

Visit your city and map the building levels using the tag: building:levels=* and explore the results with a 3D map!

December 17

Find a building or an entrance and map the house number and the name of the street it is on! Use the tags documented in: addr=*. Check the guidelines for your country!

Have you ever explored the OpenStreetMap Wiki? Start creating your own user page and share it with us!

December 19

Find a fire hydrant and map its type, this can help firemen! Use the tag: fire_hydrant:type=*.

Create your map with the data from OpenStreetMap using Mapbox Studio! Create your map style and share it with us! A full guide can be found here!

Humanitarian help can be done also by validating a HOT task, and today it is Validation Friday! Can you find a video that explains how to do it!

Find on the OpenStreetMap a place like a shop, a transport stop, or a toilet and add the tags documented in: wheelchair=*.

Create a map with uMap and share it with a friend. uMap is an open-source software to create your custom map using OpenStreetMap.

Help to translate a page in the Wiki or update an existing translation to help other contributors.

Support HOT's work via donation!

Add the surface to a road, a step or an area using the tags:surface=*. You can do it also with StreetComplete!

A map can save lives and defibrillators are essential in this regard, map one using the tag :emergency=defibrillator.

Download and learn how to use Geopaparazzi or GoMap!

Use the application you downloaded yesterday to map a drinking fountain using the tag :amenity=drinking_water!

Add the website of a shop using the tag :website=*.

Also, the second year of PoliMappers adventure is finished. Write a post on your OSM Diary about your experience with us!
