Hi there. Thanks for your help doing image of the week! -- Harry Wood (talk) 00:47, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

changing a footpath to a road

We had a chat last May, and you were very helpful. There is now a change I would like to make that I don't know how, as it's not a case of labelling, but of changing a footpath to a road. I've tried editing, but all I get is funny shapes or useless marks. Hilfe mich, bitte schön! Rothorpe (talk) 02:59, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Rothorpe, to change a footpath (maybe tagged highway=footway) to a road just change this tag to another value depending on the type of road (see list at Key:highway; e.g. highway=unclassified). See the "Use in an editor" section of the wikipage "Tags" how to edit tags (in your last edit you were using the iD editor which hides tags). Note that you first need to select the way (which is to be changed). In iD editor you can also hit the big button on top of the side bar which tells you the current type of the way and select a new type (this automatically changes the tags then). Please tell me if you had success or if there are more problems. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 12:17, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
Where do I find the tag? Rothorpe (talk) 20:09, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
Do you mean how to find out the right tag? Or do you mean how to find (show, edit) the tag in your editor? --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 21:42, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
The latter! Rothorpe (talk) 23:02, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
Hmm, let me quote myself: «See the "Use in an editor" section of the wikipage "Tags" how to edit tags (in your last edit you were using the iD editor which hides tags). Note that you first need to select the way (which is to be changed).» Could you please tell me where the problem is? First select the footpath (take care of its extensions, maybe you need to split it …), then scroll down on the left panel and select "all tags". Then you can see and edit the tags. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 23:59, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I did follow all those links, but couldn't see anything that looked like the tags you illustrate (for some reason my mouse has stopped copy/pasting). 'Select the footpath' - I click on edit first, presumably? I can tell you where it is: Portugal, Esposende, Gandra, the road running south from Café do Paço, Avenida S. Martinho, after three junctions, breaks into a footpath before becoming a road again and continuing on towards the River Cávado. In fact the road is continuous, there is no footpath (Google Maps has it right). Rothorpe (talk) 00:35, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
PS You're welcome to do it yourself, as I seem incapable of finding anything! Rothorpe (talk) 00:37, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, first on edit. Hmm, sorry that there seems to be some problem with my description or whatever. Okay, I will have a look myself, sure. Okay, you mean this location, right? I could easily fix it. But don't you want to try yourself? You could also try it by using another editor: click the small downwards arrow beneath edit and select Potlatch 2 (only will work if you have a Flash plugin installed). Select the way. If you the click "Advanced" in the bottom left corner you see the tag highway=track (your "footpath" - in fact is is a path also for two-tracked, mostly agricultural vehicles). You could change it now. However, you may note that you did not only select the relevant path bit more (extending to the East). This is a issue you first need to solve. You first need to split this way at the junction where it changes its type (I guess here). Select this junction and click the scissors icon (bottom right). Now select the part of the way which you want to change. Change its tag's value to "unclassified" and save (with a comment). --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 01:04, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Oh, your descriptions are fine, it's just that I can't see the stuff, and my browser can't find it either. This time with 'Advanced' in the bottom left. I think Potlatch was the one I tried before and it didn't work. Yes, I was thinking about that bit of the track that extends to the east: I don't know whether it exists or not. So I suppose best to wait until it stops raining and I can go out again... Rothorpe (talk) 02:04, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Well, okay, I think I will just fix this at the end, and you try next time. Maybe with more luck.
Sadly, I have not really a clue what your problem is. One more try - let's return to the current default editor (iD) and start slowly: Do you see the properties of the way after selecting/clicking it? The text should be "Edit feature: track"; with "track" being the type of the way.
The eastern track part: on the bing aerial imagery in our editors the track looks as if it exists. A average track with a bit of grass in the middle. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 03:09, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I see 'Track' on the left when I put my mouse over the missing bit of road. Below that is a selection of unfilled-in spaces: Name, Type, One way... I can't see the actual track though, as it is overlaid by white. Ah, yes, in the bing version, under the red line. (Though you wouldn't guess from that picture that the road, the left-hand part, is continuous.) Rothorpe (talk) 03:52, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Good - you see it if you move over the "missing part".
(You say it is overlaid by white – well, yes, iD does not show the track in the same appearance as our default map does it. It is shown as a white, rather thin line with a dashed outline (hard to see). The "red line" around the tack is a highlight of your current selection.)
To make the task a bit easier for you I have (just now) split the track where it changes into a road. Now: click this part - this is "selecting" it, so that the info on the left side stays there even if you move your mouse off the "missing part". Then you see all that "unfilled-in spaces" on the left and "track" on top. Move your mouse over this left part and scroll down. On the very bottom you see "all tags" (this is what is actually currently stored in the database), click the "all tags" text to un-collapse this section. Then you can change the tag as written above. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 13:28, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Done! Many thanks for your expert advice. Rothorpe (talk) 23:27, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it's still there, I'm not dreaming. Next I'll try and label some roads. Rothorpe (talk) 23:36, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Hey, super, makes me glad. Your related changeset, just for reference. Looks fine on first glance. Bedtime now. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 00:06, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Well, today I noticed that nearby there was another bit of missing road (continuing northwards over the bigger road to the north), so I put that in - but that was a few hours ago now and it still hasn't registered, though it is still there on the iD photo - maybe because it's the weekend?? Rothorpe (talk) 02:34, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Hi Rothorpe, what do you mean by "it still hasn't registered"? Where? If you mean the standard map on osm.org, then likely the problem is just your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, ...). You may need to refresh its "cache". Otherwise you only see old map images. Hit Ctrl+C while viewing the relevant position. The high zoom levels are usually, these days updated in less than 10 minutes. If you are interested in details, see [1]. … I had a look: you mean this road? I see it as road and not as track. All fine. Let me make a side note: we are talking about visibility on the default map, however, this is not the most important thing. The correct data is it. In the edits in my mapping location I quite often make edits which are not visible at all on this default map – but on other maps. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 03:20, 2 February 2014 (UTC) One more side note: It would be useful to add the source of your contributions to your comment when saving. That way other mappers will get a better feeling of how much trustworthy your contribution is. E.g. instead of "change track into road" better use "change track into road. I was there and had a look" (if you really looked at that road in reality). This is quite important, in my opinion, because sometimes mapper just do armchair mapping by just looking at the aerial imagery in the background. While this may be full of information, even more for the trained pair of eyeballs, nothing beats really looking at reality. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 04:20, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I see it now, good! I thought it might appear overnight, but meanwhile I wanted to let you know that I had succeeded in changing it. Yes, those edits are from personal observation. I was so relieved at managing to find again where to put the edit summary, that that important detail didn't occur to me. Rothorpe (talk) 22:27, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes, sure. You're doing good! --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 22:34, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Rothorpe (talk) 23:39, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Naming the roads

Oh dear! My first attempt to name a street - the one where I live - has gone wrong. I thought I was using the scissors correctly, but the name appears twice; only the one on the right, the cul-de-sac, is correct. Rothorpe (talk) 04:30, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

I guess you are talking about http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/20383226 , right? If you have a question about your edits, such a link would be helpful in future. You can find these links at the list of your edits.
A - This name is correct but B - this and C - this are not? So B and C should not get any name? --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 16:34, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
That's right. B and C (and further to the north) are in fact Rua Primeiro de Maio. Thanks for the link to my edits, I was wondering where to find that, but it's not actually working. I suppose it should be Ro Thorpe..., but the Ro somehow gets left behind. Rothorpe (talk) 20:05, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
I am not sure what you did wrong, but I guess you first did add the name and then cut the way into parts. You need to do it the other way round. First cut, then add name.
You can easily fix it yourself now: Just change the names of parts B and C to their correct name. Tell me when done, I will have a look then.
Regarding your experiment: do you know the preview feature? It is the button beneath "save". Yes, sorry, my link did not work due to the unencoded space (the wiki software thinks a link ends at a space). Fixed in my text above.
Ah, and: you can also find this list by clicking on your name (upper right corner on http://www.openstreetmap.org/ ) and then select "my profile" and then "my edits". --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 20:30, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
There is no button beneath 'save'. There are two 'saves', one on the photo-map, and another that comes afterwards, but I didn't see 'preview'. Anyway, I may have succeeded in changing it... I thought I had used the scissors first, by the way. Rothorpe (talk) 23:24, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
Right, I've found 'my edits' - thanks! Rothorpe (talk) 23:26, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
umm, which "photo-map"? To be clear: regarding "preview" I was only speaking of the wiki, the text edit here. However, not important.
If you used the scissors first.... hmm.. wait, let me have a look. No, I cannot reproduce your result when first splitting (scissors) a way.
For http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/152760414 you do not know the name? Then you have done it correctly.
What about this http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/260036255 tiny bit? Currently it has the name "Travessa Prim…". I guess it should also have no name (yet), like the southern continuation of it. In fact it could be merged again with the southern continuation, right?
Another tiny thing regarding http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/152760416 : you do not need to set oneway to "no" except in case where for example there are similar roads in the neighbourhood which are oneways. "no" is the default. But you do not need to delete the "no". I am just mentioning for your future edits. No need to make this effort to set "no".
Otherwise: good, name changed! --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 00:13, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! 'Rua Primeiro de Maio' actually goes all the way up to Rua 25 de Abril, which is the one that links to Av. S. Martinho, which was already marked. I think I'll try to repeat the names, but it may be difficult in that case. Thanks for clarifying about the preview & the summary. By 'photo-map' I meant the iD thing. Rothorpe (talk) 02:03, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
If there are more pieces of street having the same name, just give them the same name (let's leave away merging for now …). For example http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/152760414 then needs to get the name 'Rua Primeiro de Maio' if I understand you correctly. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 02:53, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
That's right, but it has included (in close-up) the cul-de-sac on the right, which I didn't intend and which may or may not have the same name. There's been so much rain recently I've been unable to go out on my scooter to have a look. Rothorpe (talk) 23:15, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
This one? http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/152760416 cul-de-sac on the north east. If you do not know if it has this name, just split the way at the junction (click the junction, and then the scissors) and remove the name from the cul-de-sac. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 00:36, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Done. Can't see it yet, but I'm getting used to that. Rothorpe (talk) 02:46, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
In general: The map updates take some minutes (usually less than 10 for high zooms). And you need to refresh your cache (Ctrl+F5). Well, you did split correctly, but you did not remove the, as I understood, possibly wrong name at the cul-de-sac http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/260551996 . Intended? --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 12:45, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Not intended, so I've had a go at removing it. Rothorpe (talk) 01:32, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Success! goood! --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 01:44, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
So I now see. But I made a careless mistake down the bottom there, which I shall now try to amend. Rothorpe (talk) 02:28, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Splitting the road

Now I see it wasn't carelessness: I need to make a boundary in the corner, where Rua 25 de Abril, right, meets Rua 1º de Maio, left. I don't see any scissors, or whatever is needed. Rothorpe (talk) 14:05, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

I do not know which location you mean. You may use a marker link to show me. In the "share" menu (right side) on http://www.openstreetmap.org/ . example link with marker.
Generally, you need to click the junction first (and preferably also the street to only split this one - you can select multiple object by holding down the shift key and then clicking them with your mouse). Then the scissors icon should appear. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 21:09, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I couldn't save the pointer on the share menu. But it's the furthest east that any of the streets we've been discussing go, a corner where the roads meet. (Actually, if you look on Google, it shows it with the right-hand road, 25 de Abril, trailing off into the woods - which it doesn't really, that's only a dirt track.) But now I'll try to get the scissors going... Rothorpe (talk) 01:55, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Success! Rothorpe (talk) 02:09, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
At Browsing#Adding_a_Marker there is a description how to make a marker link. It should really be feasable. I only could do a video/animation which shows it, but I think this text is enough. Could you try and tell me if it is understandable?
Your edit: looks good, fine! I see soon all streets having names there! :-) In case you do not know: a printout of the current OSM map with Field Papers (although it does not finish to creat my map, currently) may help you very much in collecting names when going for a walk outside. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 14:15, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Since you mention "google": just the usual reminder (maybe for other people reading here) – please do not use information (we're not allowed to) from google maps for your edits here. Yes, I know, you visited/know those streets yourself, which is fine. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 14:15, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
I got as far as the paste bit, but that only gives: http://www.openstreetmap.org
I've been having trouble pasting elsewhere, in two browsers, so that is not surprising. But I managed the marker bit. Rothorpe (talk) 16:55, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
hmm, note that do do not need to select manually. Just click into the box. Then hit Ctrl+C or rightclick in the box and copy.
If you got problems also on other webpages... could be that you have a browser addon/plugin which does not work correctly. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 19:07, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Tried both methods and nothing happens, sorry! It could well be that there is a plugin that doesn't work. Rothorpe (talk) 20:58, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Anyway, that's my lot for now until I can go out and verify. I think Google has several more right, but I need to check. Unfortunately no sign that the threat of rain is going to recede over the next few days, and I don't want a repeat of last time! Rothorpe (talk) 00:54, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
I metioned Field Papers above, but it does not work for me. Walking Papers instead works. you can easily create a printable map and take it with you while walking around to collect the street names and housenumbers (if you like). Scanning does not work at walking papers, but that is not needed. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 21:58, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

reorganisation of this wiki's navigation

Hello, I write to you because you are part of the Wiki Team. I would like to establish a navigation concept for this wiki, lead by use cases. I wrote an example main page and an example navigation page (for the use case 'contribute map data'). In January, I wrote a correspendent proposal on Talk:Wiki_organisation, with some but not much feedback. I would be happy if you could add your feedback in order to decide either to refuse the proposal or to proceed. In the latter case I will incorporate all feedback, write the two missing navigation pages ('about' and 'use') and finally I would like to change the main page. Best wishes, --Cantho (talk) 07:30, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

--Aseerel4c26 (talk) 23:36, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Hi Aseerel4c26, vielen Dank für dein bisheriges feedback! Now I proposed to apply the proposed changes to the main page. Your feedback/ vote is welcome. If you want to respond but don't have the time right now, please give a notice about when you think you can respond. Have a nice day --Cantho (talk) 10:30, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

check my Id:Tag:highway=track translation

Can you check my translation? Cheers, Iwan Novirion (talk) 06:53, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Wow, very good! :-) I think you should translate the "Related terms:" too. See the them at the German page version. If there are no similar words for "track" in Bahasa Indonesia, then just delete this paragraph. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 19:23, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
If you want more ... translate for example this one Template:Translation out of sync. It is a template which has the translation built-in (there are more templates like this, see Category:Template with translation strings). It is used, for example, at DE:Über OSM. If it would be used on "id" pages, then it would show your new translation. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 19:49, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
Did you mean about "Related term" like this?
About Template:Translation out of sync, it's done, please check it.
Any other suggestion for article to translate, Aseerel? Cheers, Iwan Novirion (talk) 04:24, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, exactly! Very good! I am not sure which pages would be most important to translate. Think about what most Indonesian users may be interested in. Maybe Using OpenStreetMap, Key:highway (more complicated since it uses a template for the table – see the German page version) and/or Highways? Or iD and iD/Shortcuts? JOSM or Comparison of editors. Just do not translate the Beginners' guide, it is messy currently. ;-) --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 12:48, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Aseerel, I will translating what your suggestion on the next weekend. :-) Iwan Novirion (talk) 01:57, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Ah, and, please watch (watchlist function here) the English page and your translation, if possible. So that you can translate any changes to the English page. Unmaintained, old translations are a problem of this wiki. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 03:10, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

take a break

note: this relates to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Using_OpenStreetMap&diff=prev&oldid=1113631 and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Xxzme&diff=prev&oldid=1113630 --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 16:09, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

It looks like we are seeing the start of a wiki edit war here. That doesn't help anyone. Please take a break to cool down a bit, and please discuss future edits before making a lot of changes. --Lyx (talk) 14:06, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Lyx. I was not "making a lot of changes". There is somebody else who makes a lot of changes, cluttering pages with a dozen boxes, messing up headings, ... and calling me a vandal while I only restored the page as it was before the undiscussed edits. I will rather go mapping than to get angry about someone unpleasant, pushing his way of thinking into our wiki pages and categories. Hopefully someone else is willing to take care. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 15:53, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
You might have noticed that I sent the exact same message to that other user as well. I did not look closer into what you both disagreed about, and frankly I don't care. I just noticed mutual reversals and angry words, and that is the moment where taking a break, take a walk and map something might be the right thing to do. Talk with each other, not about each other. And if emotions are tho high to make that possible, wait and calm down. --Lyx (talk) 18:19, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
No problem, I do not care neither anymore (but I will continue to edit other pages). There are too few interested users here. The users with the most effort and endurance will "win" and set their opinion live. Sad, but it's the way it goes. Hopefully other users disagree too and take action. That lack of any activity is discouraging. Likely because all rather go mapping. ;-) Seems we need to set up this wiki in a slightly different way. --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 00:17, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Strava

Your edit is countereffective. If you want users (and this is what i want, because it will make the map better) to learn about Strava features you need to put in iD article, because they will never make it to Strava article. I think the best solution is to copy crucial two sentences and have them in both places. Rekrutacja (talk) 00:58, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

I assume you are talking about edits related to this one. To me, it doesn't seem like the page Comparison of editors is a good page to talk about forks of editors. The section "See also" of the page iD seems like a better place for this. Cheers --Jgpacker (talk) 15:53, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello Aseerel4c26! I'm proposing another change to the OSM on Paper page (talk). I'd appreciate your feedback. Cheers. --kontextify 21:10, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Hey kontextify! :-) Thanks for the note! I had already spotted it in my watchlist and added it to my todo list. Sorry, please bear with me some days. Cheers! --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 22:23, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

DE:OSMsuspects! - Bildgröße

Hallo Aseerel4c26,

Danke, dooley

Hallo dooley, gerne, aber was findest du "falsch"?
--Aseerel4c26 (talk) 20:46, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
Danke.

Reverting edits because of no change comment

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User_talk:Verdy_p#pardon.3F Are you the wiki police? Who made it obligatory to have change comments and why do you think it is appropriate to revert a change simply because there is no comment? I consider that vandalism. --Mdeen (talk) 20:44, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Mdeen, thanks for your interest. Everybody is the wiki police. Nobody mode it really obligatory, but it just makes sense to leave 5 words (which takes 5 seconds) which make it much easier for the several other people who want to understand an edit. In the end the other people have more time working for the wiki instead of needing to invest much time to understand an edit. I think it is appropriate to revert because it is fully unclear what he edited and furthermore it is a great change to do a re-revert with a useful comment for the previous edits. Please also see the 10% of all topics on Verdy's talk page about the same topic. --aseerel4c26 (talk) 20:56, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
