Definition: A facility with swimming pools primarily used for water sports (including swimming lessons)

Proposal

The tag leisure=aquatics_centre is used for a facility that contains one or more swimming pools and is primarily used for water sports.

A facility tagged this way is a sports facility. It can be used for exercise, sports, competition and/or swimming lessons. For facilities that are more focussed on play rather than sport, the tag leisure=water_park should be used.

The tag leisure=aquatics_centre can be combined with the relevant sport=* tags, such as sport=swimming or sport=waterpolo.

The tag should be used for the entire facility, including all swimming pools, changing rooms, showers, and perhaps a small cafe or bar. The swimming pools itself can be tagged with leisure=swimming_pool.

The aquatics centre in Melbourne, Australia in which the 2006 Commonwealth Games were held

A small aquatics centre in Belgium

Rationale

The tag leisure=swimming_pool is currently used for two different purposes: 1) buildings or areas that house a swimming pool (but that are not a leisure=water_park), and 2) the swimming pool, i.e. the water area, itself. The current proposal is meant to be used for the first of these two meanings, so that leisure=swimming_pool can be used for the second meaning only. As such, this proposal helps to disambiguates between the two meanings.

Tagging

The entire facility should be mapped as area tagged with leisure=aquatics_centre. If not enough information is available to tag the facility as an area, a node can be used. The individual swimming pools may be tagged with leisure=swimming_pool.

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I still think we could also do with amenity=sports_centre + sport=swimming and/or + sports_centre=aquatics. Less fragmentation of a primary key. --Polarbear w (talk) 19:22, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
I am opposing using sports centres with subtag, as it doesn't make it clear that the centre is only / mostly about swimming / water. At least in my area (central Italy) lots of sports centres have a swimming pool, but typically it is not the main attraction (e.g. a golf course or a tennis club will also have a swimming pool often, but this is quite different from a dedicated swimming facility). --Dieterdreist (talk) 10:09, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
All of that can be expressed with subtagging in a refined hierarchy. The main use X gets sports_centre=X, while the extra facilities are added as pitches and pools (the volleyball court in the sports_centre=aquatics, and the pool in the sports_centre=golf_course), thus deprecate historic tags like leisure=golf_course.--Polarbear w (talk) 09:14, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Yes, everything could be different, but we are trying here to add a value for the existing system, not change the whole system. --Dieterdreist (talk) 15:26, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. why not tag as leisure=sports_centre, sport=swimming? --chris66 (talk) 08:37, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
Why aren't people using this combination then? According to taginfo, only 5% of all sport=swimming objects are tagged as leisure=sports_centre. Looking at the ones I am aware of in Germany, they either are missing a dedicated tag (just the swimming pool itself is tagged) or they are tagged (often mis-tagged) as water parks. Why should we have distinct leisure tags for stadions, sport centres, swimming pools, tracks, pitches, recreation grounds, golf courses, marinas, water parks etc., but not for aquatics centres (or whatever they are called)?--Dieterdreist (talk) 15:16, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. In British English, "aquatics" is more likely to refer to aquaria supplies. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 13:57, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. You started voting too soon, only one week after the RFC. There has not been a single comment on the talk page yet, and there's plenty to discuss: distinction to leisure=sports_centre, leisure=water_park, leisure (or amenity)=spa, and which of these apply to indoor/outdoor facilities. There are already a bunch of tags, and you invented yet another that has not even been used a single time so far according to taginfo. Having all of that said, I hold the view that a proposal is approved when it gets more than 50% positive votes, because the quorum increase to 74% on the Proposal_process page was itself not legitimized by voting. • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. The only places near me which have swimming pools also have a gym, sauna, hold fitness classes, etc. so would be tagged leisure=sports_centre. The is a business locally which calls itself an aquatic centre, and it sells live fish. --Peter Mead (talk) 09:35, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. Introducing a new specialized (duck) tag would lead to further tag fragmentation. --geow (talk) 13:23, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. This location is way too specialized to justify a main tag. I am also in favour of sports_center. --Nop (talk) 12:30, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. Aquatics Center implies that the center has more than just a swimming pool. In the event that the building is like, for example, a YMCA, it can be tagged as a sports centre with the many sports included either individually or through tagging. --DCTrans (talk) 23:55, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
No the proposal defines "a facility that contains one or more swimming pools", and not "more than just a swimming pool". Which YMCA do you refer to, this or that, and I wonder if they are related or not, since the latter does not mention the religious background the first stands for. --Polarbear w (talk) 12:56, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. This tag is redundant while there are leisure=sports_centre, sport=swimming tags, and we shouldn't introduce more redundancy and inconsistency in tagging just because someone is lazy enough to be unable to use two tags. Read this diary entry starting from words "Multi-dimensional classification means" for an example of situation created by tags like one you proposing. This article on topic of harmful effect of copying natural language terms would also be useful for better understanding of tagging principles. BushmanK (talk) 18:35, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
By the way, leisure=sports_centre, sport=swimming are not mentioned in proposal description, and it shows either lack of research conducted by author before proposing it or intentional attempt to hide this fact to improve chances for approval, which potentially means cheating. • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. reason --BCNorwich (talk) 19:17, 14 January 2016 (UTC) British English, "aquatics" is more likely to refer to aquaria or other aquatic ventures. The tags leisure=sports_centre, and if required sport=swimming and any other appropriate tags are better suited.
