Fontavio is a mobile app for Android and iOS that maps water and sanitation services: drinking water, fill-up taps, toilets, showers, self-service laundry, grey and black water dump stations, and marina pump-outs. It covers 50 countries and territories in Europe, plus the United States and Canada, with about 650,000 places.

Most of the places come from OpenStreetMap. The app is free to use with ads and needs no account for browsing. An optional subscription removes ads and adds offline maps, a route planner, and folders and notes for saved places.

Features

  • Map of places around the user, coloured by category, plus a list sorted by distance.
  • A compass that points at the nearest place of the chosen category, with the distance and a walking time estimate.
  • Opening hours from opening_hours, shown as open, closed, or unknown.
  • Filters: open now, free, wheelchair access, hot water, drive-over dump stations, saved places.
  • Places tagged seasonal=yes or seasonal=summer are marked as closed in winter.
  • Water explicitly tagged drinking_water=no is shown as non-potable water, never as drinking water.
  • Precise location is used on the device and is not stored on Fontavio's servers.

OpenStreetMap data

Fontavio imports OSM data from Geofabrik extracts. The full list of tags it reads, and how each is used, is in its taginfo project. In short:

OSM data is credited in the app as "© OpenStreetMap contributors" under the ODbL.

Contributions

Users can add places, correct details, confirm that a place still works, and add photos and reviews. These contributions are stored in Fontavio's own database, separate from the OSM-derived data, and are not uploaded to OpenStreetMap. To fix the underlying OSM data, edit OpenStreetMap directly. Fontavio picks up the change on its next import, except on places a Fontavio user has already edited, which the importer does not overwrite.
