 Embassy is the official office of a country in another country (for example in the capital). This tag is used for embassies, but also for ambassadors’ residences, consulates and other diplomatic facilities.

How to map

Add amenity=embassy on a node node placed at the centrepoint of the building, or on a closed way (area) area drawn around the perimeter of the embassy.

There is a new approved tag office=diplomatic which covers diplomatic facilities. Consider adding:

Additional Tags

Tag Notes
name=* Common name of the embassy in the local language, eg. "Embassy of the Russian Federation“ for a Russian embassy in the U.S. You can add names in other languages using a suffix in the name:lg=* key, where lg is the language code of that name (please only add official names and not unofficial translations). See also Multilingual names.
official_name=* The complete, official name of the embassy or diplomatic office, often longer than the commonly-used name.
short_name=* Since official names can be difficult and unwieldy at times, it should be considered to add a colloquial name like Norwegian Embassy using short _name=* or alt_name=*. Such an alternate name helps users to retrieve the desired information from the database.
diplomatic=* Used to specify the nature of the diplomatic institution (e.g. embassy, consulate, liaison office, etc.).
country=* Represented country, use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code (upper case, details below).
target=* Targeted country, use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code (upper case, details below).

To add the country code tag it with country=<ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code> (list of all country codes at Wikipedia). For example for the British embassy in the United States use country=GB (please use upper case, lower case is for language codes).

Types of embassies

Use office=diplomatic with the additional tags to specify the type of embassy, consulate or diplomatic office:

    • diplomatic=* with key values of [embassy, consulate, liaison]
      • embassy=* with key values of [yes, high_commission, nunciature, interests_section, mission, delegation, branch_embassy, residence]
      • consulate=* with key values of {yes, consulate_general, consular_agency, consular_office, honorary_consul]
      • liaison=* with key values of [liaison_office, representative_office, subnational];
