Mechanical energy

After looking at the wiki page and the taginfo, I don't see what value I shall enter for "mechanical energy" powering stuff like e.g. millstones, saws, hammers etc. One example would be https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/7530387022

This usecase is releveant despite it hasn't been added in the first proposal. I'd suggest generator:output:mechanical=* ? Fanfouer (talk) 10:17, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
It looks like node 7530387022 is a historic water mill? This can be mapped as man_made=watermill, if that's correct. My understanding is that generator:output=* is used with power=generator, not with mechanical windmills or water mills. --Jeisenbe (talk) 17:06, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Ok for man_made=watermill too. generator:output:mechanical=* will be actually relevant for power generators on which mechanical energy is took as a side business (like steam for district heating next to nuke or thermal power plants) Fanfouer (talk) 17:14, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

What about power plant that has been permanently shut down?

Does this tag describe the nominal output or the current (latest known) one? If the power plant has been permanently shut down should the tag value be set to 0? And in that case, where should the mapper store the nominal value? --Marcor (talk) 10:15, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

This is the nominal output. If some generators has been permanently shut down, they should get disused:power=generator as life cycle indication but generator:output=* should remain the same. Fanfouer (talk) 13:15, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Use/abuse of the tag to add "small_installation

I tried adding some info about how people actually use this tag, but that was removed two times. Feel free to discuss the value of "small_installation" here. I've started a discussion of the much broader topic "is the wiki descriptice or prescriptive" on the tagging mailing list, see https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2021-November/062949.html

Note that the usage of this tag is in fact already documented on the wiki, at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:generator:source=solar#Rooftop_Solar_Panels

There are two main problems:
  • It conflicts with concept separation in tagging. As mentioned in revert comment, the size or range of installation should go in design=*, model=* or even in geometry.
  • It wasn't widely discussed and could confuse both consumers and mappers. It wasn't part of Proposed_features/Power_generation_refinement or further.
As mentioned on @tagging, were you aware of local guidelines pages which can document local practices or contexts? Fanfouer (talk) 09:40, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
The wiki edit that added this output value was done back in april 2017 by @Chrabroš: and has never been talked about or suggested that I can find.
As Fanfouer suggests this is more a descriptive value than an actual rating and should be indicated in a different key. Gazer75 (talk) 15:20, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Data Cleaning Needed

Please see Talk:Key:plant:output#Data_Cleaning_Needed. I suspect similar data cleaning would be needed for this field, though I haven't analyzed it. Comment there --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 08:15, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Move page to Key:generator:output:*

Resolved: This edit request was answered. Done --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 17:21, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Since whole descriptions of the key generator:output are about usage in combination with specific subkeys and hence Key:generator:output:* has been created, I suggest to move the "old" page Key:generator:output to the new "prefix" one. So documentation is neither doubled nor splitted at 2 places and history and talk page are at the new destination. Content of both key pages is identical. --Chris2map (talk) 19:40, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
