Horse rental

The latest addition here recommends the tags horse:rental=yes and horse:type=* for horse rental. These tags are currently neither "in use" nor proposed (same for other alternatives not mentioned, e.g. amenity=horse_rental / horse_rental=yes), see details in the mailing list discussion that you can find here. There is no consensus on how best to tag horse rental. So that the readers of this page do not get a wrong impression about that, I will now remove this addition. --Hufkratzer (talk) 19:20, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Just for completion :
There's no consensus of ANYTHING:rental=* (general namespace).
As a lot of things may be rented, this should be discussed instead of only horse:rental=* (or horse_rental, whatsoever).
There are currently three different types of namespace for shop=car, shop=bicycle and shop=motorcycle.
There should be a proposal for all shops instead of a narrow-minded discussion of every single shop. rtfm Rtfm (talk) 22:39, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

When to use leisure=horse_riding instead of leisure=sports_centre?

Currently the page mentions the tag leisure=sports_centre in "See Also" without comment. However, it seems that leisure=sports_centre + sport=equestrian might often overlap with horse_riding. How should mappers determine which tag to use? --Jeisenbe (talk) 12:26, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Each mapper can decide for himself how to tag. leisure=horse_riding can be used for any horse riding facility as defined on the page. Riding can be more leisure-oriented or more sport-oriented. Article [W] pleasure riding explains that most horses are used for leisure-oriented riding (although this probably depends on the region), and it may be concluded that most facilities are leisure-oriented and that therefore leisure=sports_centre is often inappropriate to tag them. OTOH If a riding facility is sport-oriented, it can still be tagged with leisure=horse_riding and additionally with sport=equestrian to indicate this (this should probably be explained in more detail on the wiki page). So in no case do you have to use leisure=sports_centre to tag a riding facility if you do not want to, but of course you can, for example, because you want to have it rendered on OSM carto.
comparison of tag uses / nodes
tag(s) Sep. 2016 Aug 2019 increase
horse_riding 3.8k 9k +137 %
sports_centre + equestrian 2k 2.4k +20 %
for comparison: all nodes 3.5 billion 5.4 billion +54 %
We also have other tags that overlap with leisure=sports_centre, such as leisure=golf_course (and for some other types of golf), leisure=dance, leisure=ice_rink, leisure=fitness_centre, leisure=swimming_area, leisure=bowling_alley. Not everything that has anything to do with movement has to be tagged with leisure=sports_centre. Related short discussion on tagging. --Hufkratzer (talk) 19:15, 24 August 2019 (UTC) edit: percentage for horse_riding corrected --Hufkratzer (talk) 19:57, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
Most leisure=sports_centre are also used for leisure, no? --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:13, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
I wouldn't want to tag every facility where some leisure activity takes place with leisure=sports_centre. "sports_centre" has "sports" in its name and in its description: "a distinct facility where sports take place within an enclosed area". So it is inappropriate for facilities with not mainly sport-oriented activities. Examples (with website tag): way Burley Villa, UK, way CJM Country Stables, US, node Five Brooks Stable, US, node Forest View Farms, US, way Horseback Adventures, CA, node Campo Antilco, CL,way Rainbow Beach Horse Rides, AU, way Horseriding Hurghada, EG --Hufkratzer (talk) 18:39, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
Both leisure=horse_riding and leisure=sports_centre are found by Nominatim.
Only leisure=sports_centre + sport=equestrian is rendered. Moreover, this tag is more standard.
At least in France, the distinction between sport centre and leisure center is really tenuous.
In most centers, you could practice a real sport, but also practice horse riding only for pleasure without any knowledge of riding.
--Pyrog (talk) 09:22, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
For Germany, a study from 2019 seems to have shown that the majority of riders is not sports-oriented. This corresponds to what is written in [W] pleasure riding and to what I have seen. Although in most larger centres there are some riders who "practice a real sport", there are also places where sports-oriented (competitive) riding is never done. I would say this is different from other types of sports where you usually play or practice games / matches most of the time (e.g. soccer, tennis, baseball), and the tagging should better be appropriate.
In France we have relatively many sports_centre + equestrian (0.6k), only 2.8 as many horse_riding (1.7k), while in Germany we have 4.4 horse_riding for every sports_centre + eq., and globally 5.6 as many (14.6k vs. 2,6k). Any idea why that is so? --Hufkratzer (talk) 00:05, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

iD editor have a specific icon for leisure=horse_riding, but not for leisure=sports_centre + sport=equestrian.
JOSM have 2 specific icons for both tags.

How to tag a school?

How would we tag a place where people learn to ride with instructors? There's the dance:teaching=*. Could we apply something similar to these situations? --AntMadeira (talk) 22:42, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Not documented or used yet but I like the idea; dance:teaching=* is even an approved tag and has nearly 3.5k uses. We have 14 amenity=riding_school and 4 leisure=riding_school, but these tags are not documented either and "riding school" ("indoor school" or "outdoor school") may be confused with  riding arena) (Tag:leisure=pitch#Riding_arena). --Hufkratzer (talk) 14:01, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I agree that horse_riding:teaching=* (based on the approved prefix "teaching") would fit nicely in the entire horse riding scheme, specially in the riding arena tag. I guess amenity=riding_school can also have its place, in those cases where the entire area is a proper school, but the key horse_riding:teaching=* would be very useful in riding facilities with leisure areas. --AntMadeira (talk) 18:12, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
Mentioning amenity=training for completeness. ---- Kovposch (talk) 05:00, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
It seems adding training=* to leisure=horse_riding (without the amenity tag) would be sufficient. Right? --Hufkratzer (talk) 10:23, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Rendering

Currently, there is no rendering for this tag. An issue was oppened.

--Pyrog (talk) 10:01, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

* It is rendered in the Hiking and bridle-map, just an icon and the name (even for areas, icon only if a name is given), example: Centre Équestre Municipal de Bry --Hufkratzer (talk) 20:10, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
* On map.atownsend.org.uk name and area are rendered (no icon), example: Eccleston Equestrian Centre --Hufkratzer (talk) 21:06, 2 February 2022 (UTC) link update --Hufkratzer (talk) 20:49, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
* Freemap Slovakia renders name and icon (no area, icon always), example: Jazdecký areál UVLF --Hufkratzer (talk) 20:32, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
* The French style renders the name (no icon, no area), example: Centre Équestre Municipal de Bry --Hufkratzer (talk) 11:48, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
* Tracestrack renders name and area (no icon), example: Manege Pothoven (Topo map also featured on osm.org) --Hufkratzer (talk) 21:53, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
* Flosm POI map renders area and icon (name displayed only when mouse over icon), example: Reit- und Voltigierschule Hannover-Bemerode e.V. --Hufkratzer (talk) 22:58, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
