Recycling is used for a container or centre that accepts waste material for recycling, and donations of used goods.

This tag is for sites where waste of specific materials is accepted to be reused or recycled - if the site is for disposing of arbitrary waste, consider a different tag as listed under Waste Processing.

How to map

Draw a node or an area and add amenity=recycling + recycling_type=*.

Recycling type

Example photos

Tags used in combination

  • operator=* - responsible organization
  • opening_hours=* - opening hours of the centre or usage period of a container
  • capacity=* - the total capacity of a container in m³

Recycling

  • Used to describe sites only accept specific types of waste. recycling:*=* is therefore used to list all materials you're allowed to recycle or donate.
  • Use material=* to describe the material of the container itself.
  • Adding one or more types of waste with yes implies that all other types are considered not accepted.
  • Adding a more general type or category of waste (e.g. recycling:scrap_metal=yes) implies that more specific types of waste within that category (e.g. recycling:aluminium) are also accepted.

The most used

recycling:batteries yes | no node area Household batteries (e.g. D-cell, 9-volt). Does not imply larger batteries are accepted, see recycling:car_batteries=*.
recycling:beverage_cartons yes | no node area Carton package (multi-materials, e.g. Tetra Pak) for drink and food – possible duplicate of more frequently used recycling:cartons=*. Röntgen aseptic carton.svg
recycling:cans yes | no node area Many places are tagged as accepting cans without recycling:metal=* in general.
recycling:cartons yes | no node area Paper based cartons (for drink or food). Likely to be data of low value due to mixing paper cartons, multi-material cartons like Tetra Pak by various mappers. Röntgen aseptic carton.svg
recycling:cardboard yes | no node area Cardboard, used for packaging

recycling:glass yes | no node area Implies recycling:glass_bottles=*, but remains general and does not specify more delicate types of glass (drinking glasses, window glass, bulb glass, tempered glass, borosilicate glass, Pyrex). Street recycling bins are often only intended for use with recycling:glass_bottle. Röntgen wine bottle and wine glass.svg
recycling:glass_bottles yes | no node area Includes glass bottles and jars, but not the more delicate types listed under recycling:glass=*. Röntgen wine bottle.svg

recycling:magazines yes | no node area Over 90% of uses repeats recycling:paper=*, but some places are tagged as allowing magazines without allowing paper. Röntgen two sheets.svg
recycling:newspaper yes | no node area Over 90% of uses repeats recycling:paper=*, but some places are tagged as allowing newspapers without allowing paper. Röntgen two sheets.svg
recycling:paper yes | no node area In some cases more specific tags may be needed if only specific form of paper needs to be recycled. Röntgen two sheets.svg

recycling:paper_packaging yes | no node area Over 90% of uses repeats recycling:paper=*,but some places are tagged as allowing paper packagings without allowing paper. Röntgen two sheets.svg
recycling:plastic yes | no node area In the UK at least, often centres/containers will distinguish between (broadly) hard plastics (typically ones that shatter), soft plastics (typically bendy food packaging; black food plastic may be an exception), carrier bags, and all other stretchy plastics. Many will accept only a subset of these, so try to pick more specific categories if you can.

Must be combined with recycling_type=centre or recycling_type=container + container=dumpster. For other disposal locations, such as amenity=waste_basket and amenity=waste_disposal, use waste=*.
