31 Day OSM Challenge
Inspired by the annual 30DayMapChallenge, the Local Chapters and Communities Working Group of the OpenStreetMap Foundation is organising the 31 Day OSM Challenge, aka Maptober, this October 2026!
This is a fun daily mapping challenge where mappers get the opportunity to improve OpenStreetMap based on a daily theme.
How it works
- Complete the task from the daily theme list by adding or improving features in OSM and tagging your changesets with the suggested hashtags
- (Optional) Show off your edits on social media using the suggested hashtags. Link to your changesets or add screenshots of the improved map
- Repeat for each day of October!
It’s okay if you are not able to map on a daily basis or even complete all themes. There is no prize for strictly completing the challenge. You can map at your own pace and your reward is the knowledge that you contributed to the greatest map of the world!
If you are participating, please be mindful of OSM’s good practices and to not map just for the sake of completing the challenge.

Why participate?
Beside improving OpenStreetMap, these daily challenges provide you an opportunity to improve your mapping skills, learn how to use various tools, and know how to map different types of features.
Plus, if you manage to complete mapping for the full 31 days, you only need to map an additional 11 days to meet the 42-day requirement to become a free member of the OpenStreetMap Foundation!
