Managed woodland or woodland plantation. Wooded area maintained by human to obtain forest products.

Commonly used tag in case of land primarily managed for timber production.

There are major differences in the way this tag & natural=wood are used by some Openstreetmap users.

Some mappers use it for woodland that is in some way maintained or used by humans.

It is also used for any forest, by mappers that are not interested in making distinction between both tags.

See the page Forest to understand the usage of this tag and natural=wood.

Tag description

Tag landuse=forest is primarily used in developed areas of the world, where natural environment has been modified, such as Western and Central Europe. Almost all large wooded areas in this region are managed by forestry.

Types of wooded areas, for which this tag is commonly used:

  • woodland managed for economic purposes (usually for timber production)
  • woodland plantation, monoculture (e.g. pine plantation or rubber plantation)

Area tagged with landuse=forest may not be always covered with trees (e.g. clear-cutted land), as opposed to natural=wood.

How to map

Draw an area to match shape of woodland and tag it landuse=forest. If exact match is infeasible then approximate shape is acceptable. As the last resort place a node instead of an area.

Additional tags

  • name=* - name of the forest
  • operator=* - operator of the forest
  • leaf_type=broadleaved/needleleaved/mixed - describes the type of leaves.
  • leaf_cycle=deciduous/evergreen/mixed - describes the phenology of leaves.
  • produce=* - Describes the type of produce
  • species=* - for species (scientific) name - useful tag to specify which tree species predominate in given area of the forest
  • genus=* - The scientific name of the genus of tree - use where species varies or is unknown

  • wood=coniferous/deciduous/mixed - type of wood. This key is deprecated!

Rendering

If leaf_type=* is also set, this can be indicated by appropriate symbols for conifers, deciduous trees and mixed forests.

Possible Tagging Mistakes

If you know places with this tag, verify if it could be tagged with another tag.
