Esperanto Translations Project

From OpenStreetMap Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The aim of this wikiproject is to coordinate the necessary efforts to establish and maintain the Esperanto translation of the OSM Wiki.

There's lots of translation work to do for the OpenStreetMap project, both by translating the map data itself by giving names to objects on the map in Esperanto and by translating programs related to OpenStreetMap. E.g. the OpenStreetMap website and various editors.

Contributions are invited from anyone who is able to provide full or partial translations.

Esperanto is meant to enable people and improve international communication, a lot of people have already access to the OSM-wiki and OSM-tools through European languages (like English, German, Spanish, French, etc.), which are supported very well across OSM. Therefore it could be worth considering to focus people, who don't speak one of those well supported languages. These people often live in the so called "less developed" world, where access to needed tools can be harder and map data and ariel imagery is less good. This can be taken into consideration when prioritizing translations, maybe Vespucci is more important than JOSM, since more people have access to smartphones than computers, and maybe amenity=hospital is more important than amenity=bench, even though there are way more benches to map (/missing).

Translation request

If you need an Esperanto translation of a wiki page:

  1. Go to the page and edit it by clicking on the tab "Edit";
  2. Go to the bottom of the page and include the following in a separate line: [[Category:Translate to Esperanto]]
  3. Save the page and confirm the changes.

The page will then appear in the list of translation requests. Depending on the availability of volunteers working on the translation of the wiki into Esperanto, in the shortest possible time the page will be translated.

Translating Links

When you use a link that is not yet translated into Esperanto you have to use the {{LL}} template. This way, when an Esperanto translation is available the template will detect it, and from that moment on the link will take us to the Esperanto page; meanwhile, the link will take us to the English page.

See some examples on this page:

If there is an = sign in the link name, it should be done as follows:

Tag:highway=residential -- [[{{LL|1=Tag:highway=residential}}|Tag:highway=residential]]

Last-checked template

To mark when an Esperanto translation was last checked use the following template:

{{Template:Traduko|2022-05-13}}

What to translate

Since the wiki holds a lot of important help content and documentation, we'd like to make at least some of this available in Esperanto. However, other tools are important as well, maybe even more than the wiki, the following is a list of the most important ones for the whole list see the wiki page on Translation. Translation is taking place on a somewhat ad-hoc basis, and you are encouraged to join in.
